The Golden Shoe Laces
It’s the early
morning of the Long Island Marathon, full, half and 10k and I’m trying to
replace my good running shoe laces with the Adidas laces I picked up at the
Marathon Expo. I was told that if I were to wear the Golden Shoe Laces to the
finish, I would receive a tee shirt. I do not know about you, I can always use another
tee shirt! But the dam laces are too short and the only way I can use them is
to tie them into a knot.
Wait, I’m
getting ahead of myself, it all started when I noticed that the LI Marathon was
going to add a 10k to the event. I send in my application early to get the
dollar ninety nine discount (we seniors watch our pennies) and our running club
would pay part of the entry fee (win, win I say!). I did not get much running
in during the winter months and I had a hernia operation a few weeks ago. But I
can do it. My training began 2 weeks before the race with Rambo the running dog
as my coach. The first week of training netted me 5 miles with 3 miles being my
long run. The second week, I had much longer distance of 10 miles with my long
run of 5 miles and no pain. I told Rambo, I’m ready, to which Rambo replied
‘Dummy! You did not run 5 miles continuously; we stopped along the way to do my
thing’. To that, I came back with, ‘what do Dogs know’?
Well, with my
Golden Shoe Laces tied in a knot, Carol, faithful wife, and I headed out the
door to the race. I should note that Carol is always happy to get up 5 in the
morning to watch me run, but for some reason we did not speak much on our drive
to the park. The usual people were at the race, Tom Zullo
and I compared strategy on winning the 10k. The race started on time and I
began running my quick pace of 10 minutes per mile, finish with out stopping,
some pain, was not last, and happy to get in early to pick up my goodies.
When I got
home and looked at my tee shirt which I won for wearing the knotted Golden
Adidas Shoe Laces, I noted it was extra large! What in the world am I going to
do with an extra large tee shirt? It took me a half hour to unknot my shoe
laces and replace them with the originals. Rambo came to me and asked how did it go? I replied ‘Do you want a tee shirt or these
Golden Running Shoe Laces’?

Tip of the Month
Belly breathe. This is not easy and must be
practiced and consciously done just prior to a run or a race. Take air into
your belly and exhale against a slight resistance either through pursed lips or
by a grunt or a groan. This uses the diaphragm correctly and prevents the
"stitch."
What’s happening by Stan
Hi: Here is
information on coming events as of our latest meeting Sunday morning
But first the shirts: The committee
of Carol, Tony, and myself with input from Donna and
Mike has been busy. Thanks to all who gave input.
Carol arranged with a friend with connections to get us shirts in a wicking
fabric. This order will be for white short sleeved shirts. These shirts will be
suitable for both men and women unlike tanks which have different arm pit cuts.
We will have the club name in the same script as our recent shirts but maybe in
a different size. We will also have the club web address somewhere on the
shirt. We decided at the meeting to integrate art work into the front. Thanks
to all who gave input on the art work. The art work
for this shirt will be two runners – one male and one female – handing off a
baton. It will be positioned by the artist with our input. A
baton pass shows that we are a club of friends who work together and it honors
our many relay teams at the Corrigan and the Ocean to Sound relays. I
arranged for Runner’s Edge to handle getting the artist and having the printing
done. I will communicate with the artist. We will also have long sleeved shirts
which we will work on next. It will have different art work probably two or
more runners male and female running in a park-like setting. It will show we
are a club of friends and highlight our connection with the Hendrickson and the
State Parks. Tony can explain how the sizes run better than I can.
We will take
orders now but the cost cannot be determined for a while. The price will depend
on the cost of the artwork, printing, etc. which hasn’t been figured out yet.
There will be a club contribution which will reduce the price for members to an
attractive level. We hope to have all the issues decided before the June
meeting on the 17th. I will be keeping you informed on the net.
Summer Series: For

Next Meetings: It will be in

BBQ: This annual event will be at my place
on Sunday afternoon, July 15th. Joe and Carol Tito have again
graciously volunteered to coordinate who brings what. They are busy in their
move to different housing at present so preparations will have to wait a while.
Please note the change of date, mark your calendar, and hope for a sunny day.
The following Sunday will be the rain date.

Corrigan relay
by Stan - The relay was
great fun. I am sorry that not everyone could make it but I know that those of
us who could come honored John’s memory in a way he would have appreciated, We had 4 teams and they did fine. We had John’s son Sean and
his grandchildren Bill and Erin running with us. Runners and their teams with
their times for the two miles were as follows:
Jon
13:19, Gregg
The
next fastest team of the four used two very nice people who volunteered to help
us fill out the team. They were Ira and Anna. The team was named (by Joe) the
Valley Stream Great Ones. Results for this team: Ira 13:21, Tom Zullo 17:00 (yeah! Tom is running again and his knee didn’t
hurt after), Joe 21:31, Anna 15:55: finishing time
The
next team used John’s grandchildren and Rochelle Holden who had helped the club
out at relays before. It was named (by Bill - not by Donna) Team Donna VSRC.
Results for this team: Rochelle 20:31, Donna 20:24, Bill 16:00,
The
last team to finish was joined by our friends from the Long Island Walking
Club: All four runners on this team are members of LIWC: Terry and I are
members of both clubs. Joel is president of LIWC and Pam has been a friend of
the club for a long time. The team was named the Valley Stream April Fools (by
Terry, I believe). I ran and the other three race-walked: Results for this
team: Stan 20:59, Pam 25:11, Joel 24:28, Terry 26:48. The finishing time
