Vol. 26  No. 4                                                April   2006

Ø      Next Meeting will be on April 2 at Hendrickson Park, near the Administration Building. We will meet at 7:30AM for fun run, meeting and breakfast at the park.

Aphorisms from various running thinkers:

  • ‘I run because I am an animal and a child, an artist and a saint. So, too, are you. Find your own play, your own self-renewing compulsion, and you will become the person you are meant to be’ – George Sheehan, M.D.
  • I was washing my care one evening as the sun was preparing to kiss the earth goodnight. Glancing up, I impulsively pointed the hose at it as if to extinguish its flames. The absurdity of my action hit me, and I laughed. – Dennis De Haan

·        ‘My grandmother started running five miles a day when she was 60. Now she's 97 years old and we don't know where the hell she is.’

April – Joe’s Running Shoe

If your running shoe could speak, what would it say? For a moment make believe you are my running shoe.

My name is Saucony Grid number 3. I have been sitting on the shelf for 3 years. The other newer models call me the old man of the sports store. The store owner has been eyeing my spot on the shelf. He wants to replace me with a newer women’s model. Over the years my price has dropped to a low 29.95. Perhaps the cheaper price will attract a senior citizen on a fixed income. Well finally, I was purchased by a seasoned runner. I was shipped to St James in box wrapped in white 2 ply tissue via US postal service. Upon opening the box my new owner was excited. I stayed in the box for 2 months. I was let out only to go to special affairs such as church services, weddings and club meetings. A few weeks of light jogging followed and my box was scrapped. My big moment came when we entered my first race. It was fun, but I wish we were not in back of the pack. My owner told me that more races would follow and his running would get better. Between you and me, it never got better. We ran in rain, snow, hot, and cold weather – what joy. My new look faded and my bounce compressed. Now we only jog around the streets of St James. I miss the races and being a child.

If you have any articles, thoughts, or race results you wish to included in the VSRC newsletter, please e-mail them to me.   … Joe Tito

Tip of the Month

The next time you buy a pair of running shoes, (1) check for adequate room at the top by pressing your thumb into the shoe just above your longest toe. Your thumb should fit between the end of your toe and the top of the shoe. (2) Take the shoes for a test run, so you can feel the shoes in action.

What’s happening by Stan

John Corrigan Relay: It was a windy but clear day and much warmer than at some of the past Corrigan relays. It was great to see so many from the club come to run and cheer us on this morning to honor John. I didn’t count but I figure that there were over 15 of us there and many of John’s family also. I was harried no end as I had to give out the shirts, put together three teams, get them registered, and pay the entry fees. I couldn’t have done it without the help of Joe, Lara, and Donna, although it was still almost a disaster. At just about 9 o’clock with only minutes to go, I still had to get permission slips signed, fees paid, get dressed to run, and see other details taken care of while fielding all sorts of questions. The only question I remember clearly was a sweet voice asking me again and again “Why is the sky blue, daddy?”.  I was not dressed to run and suddenly I was to go on the first leg. I started with my left shoe not tied and yet I ran well in great form and at the tremendous pace of about 11 minutes a mile but just for the first 10 yards. Then reality set in, I tied my shoe, and I dragged my sorry ass around the course. I was still thrilled to finish in 24 minutes. I haven’t run, let alone raced, in about two years. The three teams did very well despite my performance with two seconds and a first. Congratulations to all who ran and cheered us on. John would have been proud of us.

John’s family was there and I was gratified when they told me how happy they were with the shirts. I always enjoy meeting the Corrigan clan. I also met a new member of the club Camille. I had heard so many nice things about her from Donna. The shirts were distributed to the buyers who were there and I mailed the rest of those ordered out. The cupboard is bare and all the extras we bought have been taken or are spoken for.

March Meeting, Elections, and Coming Events: After the relay we adjourned to the diner where we ate and had our March meeting. I thank this wonderful group of people who are nice enough to trust me with the club for what is now the tenth year in a row. I was President also in 1979 and 1980. Boy, am I old! There are so many good people here that I couldn’t single anyone out. You are all the best. And speaking of the best I salute my fellow officers who were all re-elected. They are as you know Donna Hahl V.P., Joe Tito Secretary, and Lois Timpanaro Treasurer. Thanks for your confidence in us.

Some of us chipped in and gave Lois the gift she really wanted: She will be skydiving and have a DVD made of the event. Better her than me. What a gutsy lady.

Also at the meeting we decided on some of our schedule for the coming months. Here are some of our club coming events:

April Meeting: It will be in the park on the first Sunday in April since the second and third Sundays are Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday.  Therefore it is coming up soon: We will meet on Sunday morning, April 2 at 7:30 at the Administration building. We will have a 3X1.5 mile relay race. That is three runners on each team with each running one big loop of the park. We will have a bagel breakfast and a meeting after the relay.

Future meeting will remain in the park until it gets too cold next fall.

Marathon Dinner: Our annual pre-LI-Marathon dinner will be at the Alpine Garden which is on the corner of Franklin Ave. and Hempstead Turnpike right across from Murph’s parking lot. You can park there and walk across Franklin. The food is good and we can share the bill. I thank Donna for coming up with this idea. There will be no reservations taken. Show up and join in.

Sunrise Camp Update: Eddie, Donna, and I went to the campsite after the meeting, raked leaves, and went over the walkathon course. Eddie took his GPS, measured the course and will draw a map of it. The walkathon will need volunteers on the day of the event which is June 4 otherwise known as the day before Stanley gets even older. See me about volunteering as I am in charge of day of event volunteers. I am also applying to volunteer at the camp when it runs from early July through mid August. The children attend free and there will be two sessions. I am retired so I have the time for this and if you have some time during the summer and are interested in working with the kids with cancer then you can apply for a full or part time position. If you are interested there are application forms on the website. It is up and running and you can also get more information about the camp on it. It is www.sunrisedaycamp.org .  Give me as a reference.

I will continue to work toward getting us the use of the grounds for the club to run on and for us to hold races there especially cross country races. It is a beautiful 300 wooded acres in the center of the island with great views and sufficient hills to be a great change from running on the flat in Valley Stream. I have already spoken to Fred Richman, President of the Friedberg JCC, the sponsor of the camp, about this use of the campsite.

Email and Newsletter Cutoff Date for Nonmembers: I will stop sending club emails to non-members at Easter. This will also be the last newsletter sent to nonmembers either by email or snail mail. Please send 2006 dues to Lois Timpanaro. They are $20 per family per year except it is $10 for out of state memberships

Best of Health and Happiness to all:

Stan

The Imbedded Reporter - Joe Tito

You have just passed Grandpa Joe - Don't you hate old runners with racing shirts declaring that they are thrilled grand parent and still can out run the best of the pack. You know the type – “You have just been passed by Grandpa Leo”, what ever happen to Leo and his shirt? Do not be concerned about me passing you in the next race. I am happy to report that Carol's son Brian and wife Lisa has given birth to a 6.8 lb baby girl named Sophia. My Carol is now a grateful Grand Mom and you just passed Grandpa Joe.

On a sad note - We extend our prayers and sympathy to Joe Cataldo and family on the passing of Joe’s bother Dominick. He passed from a long illness on Friday March 17.

The 13th Annual St Patrick's Day 'Go for the Green' 5k Run - Don't you loath getting a race shirt with more writing on it than the New York Times. Well, the gray with green lettered shirt had Platinum Sponsors pasted on the front, Gold Sponsors on the back, Silver Sponsors on the right sleeve and Business Sponsors on the left sleeve. The only place that did not have lettering was under the left arm pit. I think there is a shortage of green paint in Suffolk Country. A side from the 10 lb shirt, this is a great race which takes you through an older section of Smithtown and ends at the Elementary School just south of Main Street (Route 25). The Suffolk police did a great job protecting the runners from beginning devoured by the large SUVs that rule the landscape. As for Goodies (which is my favorite subject); I filled up my truck with 12 Power Pool Care water bottles, 10 St. James Plaza Nursing Care bagels, 4 New York Commercial Bank cans of soda, 10 Uncle Giuseppe’s apples, 4 Uncle Giuseppe’s oranges and 2 green cookies from the Branch Funeral Home. Yes, this is my kind of a race.

John Corrigan 4x2 Relay Race – The VSRC club entered 3 teams, which netted us 2 first place and 1 second place awards. We were unbeatable because we were wearing our ‘J.C. Remembrance white with green lettering’ tee shirts.’(See Photo provided by Ed. P.)  If John C. could see his old running club enjoying the relay race in his honor, what would he say? It was good to see John’s old friends and family at this special race. I also wish to thank Fred Haslett and the Long Island Road Runners Club for putting on this special event. After the race we had our meeting at the diner and I’m please to say that I do not have to change the newsletter heading because the incumbents were reelected again.

New Member – Please welcome Camille Sulaman from Valley Stream to our club. She ran well for the Valley Stream RC Ladies team.

That is all the news from Joe T.

What is New - Rich Ostrowski

The house is coming along with some renovations in progress or nearing progress.  We are still in the process of emptying boxes from our move and are slowly getting organized. Our neighborhood here is great.  We have about an acre of property with trees surrounding us on three sides which gives us privacy which was not an option in Valley Stream. We are in the country. As of March 1st I have been an official retiree and so far enjoying the free time but am keeping busy with the house stuff.  I had commuted to Manhattan for several weeks before I decided that the travel was not something that I thought I could or wanted to adjust to so retirement seemed the proper thing to do.   Actually I had been contemplating the big retirement step for awhile now and the two to three hour commutes put me over the edge. I have been running daily in Wildwood State Park which is about a mile from our home and it is beautiful.  The marked trails give you many choices for running and the terrain is just the right amount of flat and rolling hills.  Deer are a common site and the solitude is striking.  A far cry from running in V.S.  I do miss the company however and am hoping I will meet other runners in the area. I will keep in touch.
