April-Gloomy Running
O well! Winter is finally over, spring is wet, day
light is getting longer and I put on a few pounds. This makes for a gloomy run.
I have found the pride of sticking it out sometimes is insufficient to overcome
the repellent experience. A gloomy run is a duty run, a physical obligation with
no sense of release, just a weary chunk of exertion to keep me from feeling
guilty later. How am I going to get enough training in to last the L.I. ½
One solution to this nasty conundrum is to make a
joke out of the run. Laughter is a great
release when I get ultra-absorbed in taking my responsibilities too seriously
or when I become morose about my job. I reflect back when Rambo the Dog and I
were jogging in St. James, minding our own business, when we passed by a
neighbor’s cat. The cat took one look at us and ran up a tree. Rambo did not
bark at the cat nor look at it to cause this leap of faith. The neighbor took a
look at us and her cat in the tree and did not say a word. I took a quick look
at Rambo and I swear he had a sly smile on his face. Rambo and I are not cat
people, my sister is, and she has four of those things. I would like to see her
jog with her four cats.
A final note – The Kings Park 15 K, which is held on
the 3rd Sunday of March, is a Scenic, Hilly
9.3 mile run through the beautiful challenging roads of

Tip
of the Month
Warn muscles are more pliant and less prone to tear.
Five minutes of warm-up at a fairly intensity should be adequate. Do a little
more in the morning or on cold days. After a workout, walk or continue your
activity at a low intensity until your heart rate drops to 10 to 15 beats per
minute above your resting rate. Never stop exercising suddenly-doing so can
trigger a potentially dangerous drop in your blood pressure.
What’s happening by Stan
Corrigan Relays: It was good running weather, not like the
polar conditions of last year. We had four teams who ran hard and did well, and
we remembered John in the best way. His spirit ran with us. It was good to have
John’s children, Sean, and Catherine, and his son-in-law Kevin come to watch
the race and eat breakfast with us. Sean said that John’s entire family
appreciated the club’s efforts, and they felt that this was a great way to
celebrate John’s memory. We hope and expect Sean and Kevin will be running hard
soon.

Future Meetings: The first two Sundays in April are Palm and
Easter Sunday. It doesn’t seem reasonable to squeeze in the April meeting on
the 18th or 25th so we will skip the April meeting this
year. You will have to make due with this newsletter. The May meeting is at the
Long Island Marathon Pasta Party at Murph’s on Friday April 30. [Details
below].
The June
meeting will be at
Future Events:
As you
probably know, the Long Island Marathon will be partly in the streets this
year. You can find the course map and information at flrrt.com, where you can
also print out an application. This site links to active.com where you can
register online until April 23 or go directly to active.com and enter
long island marathon and any in the appropriate race search boxes. There is an
additional fee for online registration but they say it is not large. I am
debating if I want to walk/slow-jog the half even though it will take me at
least three hours. If my sanity wins out, I will be somewhere on the course
cheering you on.
I plan to be
away in early July so we will tentatively schedule the annual barbecue on July
18, which is the third Sunday in July. This will be the July meeting. The
Rotary 4-Mile Run will be on August 1. Boris is busy working on it. To save
money, it will be scored the old-fashioned bib number way. Can we live without
the chip? We’ll find out. The August meeting will be on the next Sunday, August
8, and it will be in the park.
Best Wishes: The officers of the club wish you all the
best in this holiday season and a speedy recovery to all that are ill or
injured.
