Vol. 26 No. 8                                                 August   2006

Aphorisms from various running thinkers:

·        ‘The advantage of exercising every day is that you die healthier.’ – Anonymous

·        ‘Character consists of what you do on the third or fourth tries’ – James Michener

·        ‘If you are going to try cross-country skiing, start with a small country.’ - Anonymous

August – My Sirens

According to Greek mythology, sirens (sea nymphs) inhabited certain Mediterranean coastal areas. As ships passed by, the sirens sang such enchanting songs that the sailors, drawn by the music, would jump overboard and drown. My biggest temptation is to get another 10 minutes of sleep which becomes ‘Tomorrow is another day to do a morning run’. This temptation and others can lure us away from the discipline of running by promising an easy life. The expression of ‘No pain, no gain’ has a false ring of truth to it.

If you have any articles, thoughts, or race results you wish to included in the VSRC newsletter, please e-mail them to me:  . . . Joe Tito

Tip of the Month

Eat to run. Eat a good high-protein breakfast, and then have a light lunch. Run on an empty stomach at least two, preferably three hours after your last meal. Save the carbohydrates for the meal after the run to replenish the muscle sugar. Drink plenty of fluids. Take sugar-free drinks up to 15 minutes before running. Then take 12 to 16 ounces of easily tolerated juices, tea with honey or sugar, defizzed Coke, etc. before setting out. In winter that should be all you need.

What’s happening by Stan

Barbecue   It was hot, hot, and hotter at the barbecue but everyone adjusted well. Bob and Val came in from Pa. and Christine Hogue came wearing her medal for her finish at the ¼ mile race at Vytra. See the picture in this month’s GLIRC Footnotes: She is adorable and so is her new sister in the photos that Jim passed around. Joe and Carol did a great job organizing and Joe and Donna were chefs for the day. We discussed Ocean to Sound and Joe distributed our new mailing list. We had a chance to meet Petra’s and Camille’s families. Petra provided the music and everyone contributed to the food, drink, and cleanup. I especially thank Donna and Terry for staying late to finish the clean up. My barbecue was left clean as new. Thanks to all except the mosquitoes.

Ocean To Sound  I took names at the barbecue of those who wished to run for us this year. Without a miracle we will have only one team this year. The status of the relay is the following:

Jon will run leg 1 but will step aside if we have enough runners without him. Jon recently had a hernia operation.

Joe Tito will run leg 2.

Mike, Donna, Camille, and Lara will run legs. Lara wants leg 7.

Petra will run a leg but she would have to start training and would not mind skipping it.

I don’t recall if it was decided that Luke was definitely going to run a leg or if Luke would run if we don’t have enough for a team. If he runs then he and Lara will run legs 7 and 8.

Gregg will only run if absolutely necessary to complete a team.

I believe Ed wants to run a leg but I need confirmation. Tony emailed that he couldn’t make it.

We have still to hear from Sean, Denis, and Fred.

The price for a team has increased this year to $320. As we did last year it will only cost each runner $20 and the club will pick up the remainder which is $20 per runner.

Stanley’s Peeve #234:  This is a peeve of mine: There is a list on the relay application of the different categories for the teams. The list has not changed for decades. There is a men’s open and a women’s open, a mixed open team (minimum 4 women), and the same for masters and seniors, physically handicapped, and Law Enforcement. So there is no place for a team like ours with runners of all different ages and 1,2, or 3 women. We will have 3 – Camille, Donna, and Lara.

Visit with Rich: I went out to see Rich at his new home. Regrettably I didn’t get to see Kathy as she was at work. Rich is now living in Wading River and his home and grounds are beautiful. The building looks almost new and the main interior rooms have ceilings about 2 floors high and there is a great kitchen with a center island. As you may know Rich is an excellent cook. He is also an herbalist and he has an herb garden on his acre wooded property. We went on a hike at Wild Wood State Park which is very close and Rich often runs on the trails there. Rich told me that he is biking now and weather permitting he has kayaking and other water sports and cross country skiing. He told me that he would be going with his daughter Kim to Vietnam to see how it has changed since he fought there. His first report came by email today (August 3) and it appears elsewhere in this rag.

Best Wishes to Liz and Janice and all who are having medical problems.

Stay Cool,

Stan

Zucchini Pie – Arthur Foti

Artie’s Zucchini Pie was a great success at the BBQ. By popular demand we present the ‘Zucchini Pie – The pie of runners’.

3 cups zucchini (sliced then and dice)

            1 onion, small and chopped

            1 cup bisquick mix

            4 large eggs

            ½ cup vegetable oil

            ½ cup grated cheese

            Parsley flakes

            Salt and pepper to taste

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Mix together all ingredients until zucchini is evenly coated. Pour into buttered pie plate (square or oblong 12”). Bake 30 minutes until golden brown.

Memento Mori – Harry Feiedlander

On Sunday morning, 7/30/06, they came to see me: Ron Barcellino, Bob and Val Croon, Jack Horowitz, Tom and Ellen , their son, Douglas, and Ted Orosz. It's been more than 10 years since Joyce and I left Valley Stream for Manhattan, and we were deeply moved by the visit. Good friends; how precious, how rare.

Speak Memory -

Ron: A work in progress. To run with Ron, mile after mile, is to engage with a constantly evolving interlocutor; both personally and in his world view Ron is always learning, refining and growing. After 10 years, still the same Ron; not for him the unexamined life.

Bob Croon; The organizational muscle behind the expedition. Do you imagine it's easy mustering 8 people to go see the oldest member of the club in his lair in the city? (Don't give me Benson - I'm  talking the oldest dues paying member. John Corrigan, may he rest in peace, i would defer to.) Bob no longer runs; I can't believe it as, in many ways. he was the best natural athlete in the group. And Val. Don't I remember her running, too, and then walking?

Jack: Jack and I used to run with an ex addict (a flameout - at first 60+ miles a week, then nada), who made an upper middle class living ministering to other soon to be ex addicts - he hoped. Meanwhile, Jack with a Masters in Mechanical Engineering from Columbia had been down sized; in 1993 no one ever got laid off. So the addict prospered, and the engineer suffered; ONLY IN AMERICA! as the saying goes. By the way, Jack squeezed the proverbial lemonade out of the seeming lemon; has lived like a king without working another day since then.

Tom Moore: What's to say about a man whose mission is running ultras? Certifiably a lunatic - but he's all ours. So far still the only guy I know who's run across the Arctic Cirlcle

Get well greeting to Bill Benson and Janice McGeary by Terry Charieton

Bill has been going under a battery of medical tests and has lost weight. He has not run in any races since the early spring.

Janice will be having an operation on her foot at the end of July, to correct the botched surgery she had last year. She has had a year of pain since the original surgery. Hopefully this surgery will correct the problem and she will be back walking or running soon. Terry

The Newest Member

A little memo to announce the newest member of the GLIRC, Valley Stream and UFT running clubs. Barbara Elizabeth Hogue, born on Sunday, July 16, at 11:35 pm

6 pounds, 11 ounces and 20 inches. She's going to be a runner alright since we can't keep a blanket on her feet.  She's always kicking it off. There may be someone new at the 1/4 mile little women's fun run next July.

 Love,

Jen, Jim and Chrissy Hogue

O my, she's a cute little one.  Just like her big sister.  Wait a minute, didn't we just recently get this same email. Two babies in one year!  Nah! Barbara Elizabeth Hogue.  Has a nice ring to it.  A unique name for a very special little girl. A few years from now Jim will be surrounded by loads of drama, pms's, the mood swings, the clothes, the hair, the shoes, the how do I look scenarios, the I look terrible scenarios, I hate myself scenarios, the boyfriends, most importantly let's not forget high school, new car (no second hand cars for girls) college and weddings to name a few. I'm not scaring the new parents, they know all this stuff already, probably been there themselves. My best wishes and congratulations to many years of health and happiness to the Hogue family.

Hello from Vietnam – Rich O

Hi all,   Kim and I arrived in Hanoi Sat. evening and checked into our hotel only to have to move to a sister hotel a few kilometers away in the morning where we would stay for the next few days. It has been pretty hot and humid here but you kind of get used to it.  Hanoi was pretty intense with the traffic, mostly motor bikes, and it is quite amazing how everyone copes. But crossing traffic is an experience.  Mostly no one gets killed.  Almost all brands of textiles are sold and made here and you can get some really good deals usually with some bartering.

Monday morning we bussed out of Hanoi and had an overnight on a boat to Hoy An Bay which was spectacular.  We explored the caves on the Islands in the bay and had an opportunity to do some swimming and later that evening had a seven course meal on the boat with plenty of wine and beer before retiring.

The following morning we drove back to Hanoi and spent the next two days touring the city taking in the Ho Chi Mhin Mauselium and the infamous Hanoi Hilton. More about that another time.

Yesterday evening we left Hanoi for a 14 hour train ride, with sleeping berths, to a town called Hue, where during the war with the U.S. there had been a major fighting during the Tet offensive of 1968.  Although the N. Vietnamese had lost many people during the Tet it was a turning point for the war.  For them and for us.

Hanoi was not familiar to me since I spent little time in any Vietnamese City but seeing the countryside on the way to Hue was very familiar seeing the country side south of the DMZ which we crossed at about 6:30 this morning.  It brought back many memories.

The people we are traveling with are wonderful and usually party with every evening and our tour guide is an exceptional person who spends much time with us and does look out for us.  However I feel very safe in Vietnam.  We were told it was the safest country in the south east.

We will be here in Hue for three days, I think, taking in the sights before moving off again.

I will keep in touch.

Rich

Fun Runs, Speed Work, HILL WORK and Long Runs

·                 Wednesday evenings. Group Runs / Walk at the Valley Stream pool at 6:00 PM.  Check with Donna, If new to club.

·        For Hill Work in Alley Pond Park on Sunday mornings we meet at 7:00 AM.  At Alley Pond we have a standard 6-mile loop and a lake loop which adds about 3 miles. Some people run 6 miles, some longer; you can decide at 5.5 miles. For those who go directly to Alley Pond Park, parking is on Winchester Boulevard just off of Union Turnpike.

·        For Long Runs we will meet on Saturday mornings, time of 7:30 AM at the bridge in the park.  Be on time though, because after one loop in the park we sometimes go off to places hither and yon. Bring water as we often leave the safe confines of the park.
