Ø      Valley Stream Rotary 4 Mile Run – Cancelled

Ø      August 14 – Next meeting in Valley Stream Park with 7:30 AM start.

Aphorisms from various running thinkers:

·        ‘I don’t train. I just run my 3-15 miles a day’ – Jack Foster

·        ‘I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified’ – 1 Corinthians 9:27

·        ‘The unfortunate thing about this world is that good habits are so much easier to give up than bad ones’ – W. Somerset Maugham

August – The Relay Team

Over the years, our club has participated in a few relay races and I was honored to run in a few of them. My suggestion for a successful relay run is always volunteer for leg one. I was in leg one of a cold February race at Sunken Meadow State Park. When the gun sounded, the group moved out and I was in the back of the pack. I remember my little fat legs moving but nothing happening. I looked out into the pack of runners and set my sights on a chubby kid who was running with his mom for support. Working hard I was able to out-run him (and mother) at the quarter mile mark. My great effort put our team next to last. The Baton was passed to my friend (no names are given to protect me from bodily harm - who is currently training Florida senior citizens for the 2008 Olympics). His noble effort put us back in last place. Some time later the baton was passed to another unnamed male person (he is a president of a local south west Nassau running club) who pulled a muscle, yelled in pain and locked in our last place award.

The way I see it, the main advantages of being in leg one is to watch the other team members suffer and be first on the food and drink line.

Tip of the Month

One study shows that ‘weightlifting can cut depression by 50 per cent for older people. Thus, weight lifting may be on a par with drug therapy in combating depression, according to geriatrician Dr. Nalin Singh of Sydney’s Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Besides fighting depression, weight lifting strengthens ageing bones and muscles, helping older people avoid fails. It also helps control arthritis, diabetes and high blood pressure.

What’s happening by Stan

Notice   Large parts of this column are taken verbatim from various e-mails I have sent out this month. I believe in “Waste not, want not”.

Rotary Run  The race has been cancelled due to low pre-registration. I talked to Boris about putting on the race in December or March. The decision on when to put on the race is up to Boris. I hope we do have it soon and it is a success. I will try my best to work with Boris on this.

Barbecue   The club has the greatest people and I was happy to have so many guests at my house. I counted over thirty people at the barbecue. We were blessed with great weather - at least in the shade - and a good time was had by all. We had some guests from the Long Island Walking Club and we met our youngest member Christine Hogue who is cute as a button. Thanks for all who volunteered to make it a success. I will list those I remember. Joe and Carol were just great arranging the barbecue and working at it. Rich and Donna worked the grill and Donna led the clean up. Petra provided the music. Bob and Val came in all the way from Pa. Many people helped clean up and serve. Thanks to all.

Ocean To Sound  I took names at the barbecue of those who wished to run for us this year: They are with shirt sizes the following:

Donna - M, Ed- x-large, Mike -large, Rich - large, Lara - M, Tom M. - large, Joe - L, Rochelle - M, Debbie - M, Tom Z. - large.

Here is a list of those of last year runners who didn't sign up at the barbecue

Sean - large, Dave - x-large, Jon - x-large, Gregg - x-large, Dorothy - Medium, Fred - large, Denis - large,

Will all people who want to run this year and didn't sign up at the barbecue please get back to me soon on whether you want to run for us this year? I don't have Fred and Denis on my e-mail so it you see them, please tell them to get in touch with me.

It is pretty hairy to get exactly 12 people into two teams. We will probably have a few too many or a few to much and we will have to scramble. So I can't guarantee any spot. Also there is a problem with several people wanting the same leg and not willing to run any other leg. I can't put more than two people on the same leg unless I get 8 more people for another team and that's not happening. Also it won't be possible to have a fast master's team. Sorry!

Bob will not be at the relay to do support so we will have to make up the slack. I will of course help out and Terry has kindly volunteered. For the rest I need more volunteers. I hope that as in the past some runners will also do support. I hope that Joe and Fred can each handle a team. Donna has volunteered to go with one car. Please volunteer whether or not you are running a leg. I need someone to pick up the packets. And by the way, I need the race applications. I misplaced mine and with the painter starting tomorrow I may never find it in time - so someone please get at least one to me.

On the bright side, the club agreed to that it will only cost each runner $20 and the club will pick up the remainder which, if it is the same price as last year, is $17.50 per runner.

Caps  Lois has informed the club that we have $1500 in our account so I think we can afford to get something additional for our members. We have to be careful not to go nuts on spending since we lost the Franklin race but I think we can certainly afford something nice. I suggested and the club agreed to get caps with the club logo. Will someone volunteer to handle this? I am thinking of the club paying for most of the cost and each member who wants a hat paying the rest of the cost. This should work like it did for the windbreakers last year.

Enjoy  Now that I am so much better after the shoulder surgery, I try to remember each day to celebrate the wonder of feeling healthy and being active. I watched the Tour de Lance day after day marveling at the endurance of those athletes and I reminded myself that few people are gifted in the speed and coordination to be superior athletes but most people can improve their endurance to have great fun in activities like running, hiking, biking, swimming, skating, skiing, etc. Be happy in your active life and remember those who are injured and ill in your thoughts and prayers.

Best Wishes,

Stan

The Imbedded Reporter – Joe Tito

As the official imbedded reporter for the VSRC, I have come across many noteworthy items which require me to make them known publicly.

Mike Gillen is constantly on the look out for Tommy M. There is another member of the club who is also missing! He goes by the name of ‘The VSRC Web Master’. Well, I was lucky to catch up with the old Webber at a LIRRC Wednesday Night Race. I’m here to report that Ed P. is alive and well and is training for the Iron Man Triathlon. He is doing lots of biking, swimming and running. His training program is unique in that he carries a 15 pound GPS watch to build up his left arm. You should see this 3 by 5 inch contraption; it combines Watch, Speed and Distance Monitor, Heart Rate Monitor with Memory Recall and can be strap to an arm or carried by most SUVs.  Ed tells me that ‘The left Arm is the Key to wining a triathlon’.

After 14 years of questionable reliability, the old white Pontiac Grand Am has died. The mighty steed has taken me to various races from a marathon in Connecticut to local races in Valley Stream is now resting in a junk yard scheduled to be recycled into a Chinese refrigerator. It is time for a replacement; Carol and I are now the owner of a Red 2005 Tucson – Hyundai SUV. ‘Long live Korea’.

Rambo the Running Dog visited St. James the week end of the VSRC BBQ. It was good to run with my hairy buddy. We did the usual run, waking up the local dogs and making our stops. One of Rambo’s favor places has been replaced by a new monster house, he (Rambo) indicated that the area is getting crowed. On the way back to the house, we did stop and save a small box turtle trying to get to the other side of the road. (Why do turtle cross the road? I don’t know). We hope the turtle is happy in the woods.

The annual BBQ at Stan’s was a great success; it was so nice to see all of you. Carol and I want to thank all who came and helped make the day a success. We could not have done it with out you.

Over and Out.   Joe Tito

Zucchini Pie – Arthur Foti

Artie’s Zucchini Pie was a great success at the BBQ. By popular demand we present the ‘Zucchini Pie – The pie of runners’.

3 cups zucchini (sliced then and dice)

            1 onion, small and chopped

            1 cup bisquick mix

            4 large eggs

            ½ cup vegetable oil

            ½ cup grated cheese

            Parsley flakes

            Salt and pepper to taste

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Mix together all ingredients until zucchini is evenly coated. Pour into buttered pie plate (square or oblong 12”). Bake 30 minutes until golden brown.

A Photo for Donna

Joe: Here's a picture from the VYTRA 5k on Saturday, 7/9. We all met in the registration area before the race and chatted and laughed a lot. This race has a judged race-walk that starts 5 minutes after the runners. It was pretty funny when the race walkers just blew right by us. Some of them are very amazing. I like this race because you have to run around a track to go through the finish line. They didn't give participants a shirt this year. Instead we got a really handy backpack filled with great stuff. The goodies and giveaways at women's races are so much better than at co-ed races.  After the race, while we were waiting for the raffles and awards, we all sat on the grass and relaxed. It was a nice way to start the day. What could be better than being with friends and relaxing on the grass?  Dorothy, Ellen, Rose, Mary O. & Lois & I walked the race. I'm not sure what our time was, but we had a fun time. Rochelle and Debbie did the race, but I have to get her time. Thanks a lot. Donna
