January – The year that was

So often we enter a new year with hopes, desires, and resolutions that can be the seeds of positive change. But the key to what actually happens in our lives is in the making of definite plans. There’s a difference between saying, ‘I would like to run a 20 minute 5K’ and saying ‘I’m training for a 20 minute 5K’. One statement expresses a desire; the other indicates definite preparation. This is the time of the year for us to make our noble plans. In my case I will train for a 26 minute 5K, a 2:05 ½ marathon and lose 10 lbs. Time will tell if these goals are to be met. Post Note: Rambo the Running Dog says: ‘That I will gain 15 lbs, run a 5 minute slower 5K and rest at all the water stops’ – What do dogs know!

Looking back, our club had some nice events: John Corrigan’s Relay Race (Our club received a few awards), Spring Pasta Party (Thanks Donna and Fred), BBQ at Stan’s, Fun runs in the park, The Ocean to Sound Relay Race, supporting the Valley Stream Rotary Four Mile race (Thanks Stan for your efforts and hard work), Christmas Holiday Run around the EAB tree, and the New Year Eve run in Valley Stream Village Park. Special thanks to Ed Pettinato for his work on Valley Stream RC’s Web Site (Take a moment and view it – Nice work).

Tip of the Month

Researchers have found that eating the same number of calories in five daily meals versus one or two meals is better for maintaining weight. One study showed that people who ate five daily meals had lower body mass indexes and waist-to-hip ratios than individuals eating the same number of calories in two meals. Why? Your body expends energy to digest and process food every time you eat.

What’s happening by Stan

ITS A NEW YEAR: I am not good at inspirational stuff so I will leave that to those who can do it much better than I can.  I would like to briefly talk about the club’s annual schedule. I think it is important to mix the old, tested events with some new ones as times change. Every year we have our weekly runs and monthly meetings. We also have our New Year’s Run, John Corrigan relay, LI Marathon party, Summer Barbecue, Ocean to Sound Relay, Rotary Run, and Christmas morning run. There are also events that some of us do yearly such as the L.I. Half and Full Marathon, the Long Island Parks Summer and Winter Series, the New Year’s Midnight run in Central Park, the many turkey trots and other races long and short. This year we instituted our park meetings with surprise baton relays. I hope you enjoyed all this as I did. On the down side, this year we lost the Franklin race (see below) and there was not sufficient interest to have a N.Y.C. Marathon party. So out with the old and in with the new! I hope we can continue that which is worthwhile and start on a few new adventures. Let’s have some more good times.

OTHER SPORTS: This is a running club but many members are doing other sports. I know that Donna, Eddie, Rochelle, Ted, Lara, Liz, and others are doing biking, swimming, hiking, skiing, softball, kick boxing, and more. Some are competing in biathalons and triathalons.  Personally I have been walking faster (still pretty slow) and now I am beginning to go on hikes. I hope to begin a swimming routine. I am trying to accommodate my medical problems (primarily arthritis) to my urge to be active and competitive. So I hope nobody gets upset if some of us talk of other sports besides running. It’s still my first love but sometimes the flesh is weak.

ROTARY FOUR MILER:  When I became President (for the second time) we had no club races and then we had two. Because of a certain grinch, we are now hanging on to just one, the Rotary Run. I talked to Boris today and he says I have persuaded him to put on the Rotary Race on the Sunday of first week in December which is the date that we used for the Franklin race. I told him that Seaford had taken that weekend but we agreed that it was still a better date than beating our heads against the wall in August. I will do my best to make this a success and I am confident that you will contribute your council and aid. It will not happen without you.

ELECTIONS:  We will hold elections at the January meeting. The present officers are Stanley Friedlander, President, Donna Hahl, Vice President, Joe Tito, Secretary, and Lois Timpanaro, Treasurer.  These three troupers are doing a marvelous job and I hope that they decide to run again and that you will re-elect them. I will try to win your support for another term in office and deeply thank you for your support up till now.

JOYOUS ARRIVAL: The Hogues sent this E-mail to Donna who passed it on to me:

“Christine Bridget was born on December 21 at 5:34 p.m., weighing 6 pounds, 6 ounces. She already shows an abnormal amount of leg activity for one that young!! I wonder why!!

Happy New Year and Best Wishes,

Jen and Jim”

Congratulations to the Hogues and greetings to Christine Bridget.

Bless you all.

HELLO 2005 AND GOODBYE 2004:

My Morning Coffee by Joe Tito

I have never given caffeine a second thought. I tend to ignore the evidence pro and con. Drinking coffee has always been the way I have jump started my engine in the morning. On race day, my standard operating procedure is to have one and only one cup of coffee at my rising. Coffee takes me out of my drowsy half-waken state and transforms me into a person eager to get on with the heroic quest and help me find my running shoes and socks. I am now willing and able to join my cohorts at the starting line of the great-agony-to-be.

A recent study at the American College of Sports Medicine showed the possible benefits of caffeine for distance runners. Runners when exercised to exhaustion used less glycogen during the early phase of excises and had more glycogen left at the point of exhaustion.  The investigators concluded that caffeine spare muscle glycogen. Therefore, based on this study, caffeine is good because you expire later in the race.

Not all the Valley Stream Runners drink or like coffee – Mr. Tony Cannonito drinks Milk (Yuk), see Holiday Run Breakfast photo. I should also note that caffeine and alcohol can leach calcium from your body. In my case it did have an effect on my height – I was 6 foot 2 in 1984. Over and out. Joe T.

Donna walks off the Turkey

On Saturday, 11/27 I did a 12 mile walk with the Shore Walkers in the city. It began at the entrance to the South Ferry train station in Battery Park and ended at the Little Red Lighthouse under the G. W. Bridge. They call this ‘Walk off the Turkey’. It's always on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. It takes you through parks and recreation centers along the water on the west-side of Manhattan. It was a beautiful day and a fun adventure.

The Shore Walkers is an environmental Walking Group. They are located in New York City. The walks the Shore Walkers have are usually very interesting because they go through parks and recreation centers. Terry and I belong to this club and the Nassau Hiking & Outdoor Club that meet in Eisenhower Park.
