July – Why I Run

If you read Runner’s World Magazine or other literary works on the subject of running you will always see a list of reasons to run. An example from Runner’s World is: ’Running is the best method of stress reduction on the market. Thirty minutes of running will work wonders in dissolving stress accumulated on the job. I’m here to say, ‘No way Jose’. Running can causes death – just ask Jim Fixx who wrote a running book and later died while jogging. These lists do not capture the real reasons for running; in most cases they contain propaganda and only are used to promote the sale of running shoes and woman’s red tights. I have my own list which is based on real hard facts:

·        I like long runs, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.

·        My mother-in-law started running five miles a day when she was 60. Now she's 97 years old and we don't know where the hell she is.

·        I joined a health club last year to improve my running, spent about 400 bucks. I haven’t lost a pound. Apparently you have to go there.

·        The only reason I have taken up running is so that I could hear heavy breathing again.

·        I always run early in the morning before my brain figures out what I'm doing.

If you have thoughts, or race results you wish to included in the VSRC newsletter, please e-mail them to me  . . .  Joe Tito

Tip of the Month

Weigh yourself regularly. Initially you will not lose much weight. What you lose in fat you will put on in muscle. Running consumes 100 calories a mile and there are 3,500 calories to a pound so you can see weight loss will be slow unless you do heavy mileage.

What’s happening by Stan

BBQ:  We will meet at my place, 77 Birch Lane, at 2 p.m. on Sunday July 30 for the annual barbecue. There will not be a club run in the morning before the BBQ. Joe and Carol are doing their usual great job of handling the arrangements so please contact them. The details are given by Joe elsewhere in this newsletter. If it is raining strongly, we might postpone it to the following Sunday, August 6. Call me or Donna that morning. The August meeting will be at the barbecue. The main order of business will be getting teams ready for the Ocean-to-Sound relay. I hope you can all be there.

IT’S NOT JUST RUNNING: In older days the club was almost exclusively into running with a group run of Wednesday nights. For the first years the run was near Alley Pond running three loops on from the Seminary around the shopping center and up to Marathon and back being one loop. The club had a batch of runners then who could do the 8.4 miles up those steep hills at under 6 minute pace. The club would then go to a local pizzeria where we held brief meetings once a month. In later times we met at the park and did loops and also pizza afterwards with meetings once a month at the administration building. During these times the big events were the marathons where most of the club would run both NY and Long Island.

It is different now: We still do running and marathons but we also do bi and triathlons. In 1997 I mapped out a course at Alley Pond and ran it on Sundays and slowly others joined me and now it is a club fixture. The club Saturday runs is a club fixture. Wednesday night has become a walking night for a group of members. A group joined with some nonmembers is meeting at five in the morning during the week to run in the park.  A full schedule of runs is listed in the back of this issue and every issue. People are also hiking, biking, and swimming. They are also going to gyms to work out, do spin classes, and practice yoga. (You do sports but you practice yoga. I don’t know why.) I think it is just great that we as a society who in years past would not exercise at all now are into so many healthy and fun activities. We are all the better for it.

Privacy Notice: At the barbecue we will be distributing a list of club member’s personal information such as addresses and phone numbers and perhaps it will also go out in other ways such as an attachment. If there is information that you don’t want to be made public please contact Joe ASAP and he will remove it.

BEST WISHES AND GOOD HEALTH TO ALL:

Stan

Why Run? - Taken from Runner’s World without permission.

 1. Running is the most efficient path to cardiovascular fitness. Thirty minutes a day, four days a week will yield an excellent level of fitness in the shortest possible period of time.

 2. Running is the most accessible of aerobic sports. No matter where you live or travel, an excellent area for running is almost always close by. You don't need to find a health club or to worry about taking along bulky equipment.

3. Running is inexpensive and simple to learn. You need good shoes, decent clothing and not much else to participate. Everyone knows how to run, and information on training is widely available.

4. Running is the best method of stress reduction on the market. Thirty minutes of running will work wonders in dissolving stress accumulated on the job.

5. Running is an excellent component of any weight control program. Few activities burn calories more quickly.

6. Running is a flexible method of training. You can run at your own pace, with or without company, at whatever time of day suits you.

7. Running makes you feel good. Your fitness, self-esteem and confidence all will increase with a regular running program.

8. Running offers a unique opportunity for recreational runners to mix with world-class athletes. You can't play in the Super Bowl or the World Series, but on almost every weekend, runners compete in the same events with the fastest human beings ever to inhabit the planet. There are also low-key social events that emphasize fun and friendship.

9. Running is for families and individuals of all ages. There are running programs for kids, masters programs for those over age 40 and events for families.

10. When you run, you're in good company. Millions of people—including three of the last four presidents of the United States—run for health, fun, fitness and competition. And you'll find running clubs in almost every community in the country.

‘You-all’ come to the annual club BBQ on Sunday July 30 at 2 p.m. at Stan’s home at 77 Birch Lane.  All members, family, friends and pets are welcome. We will work the party as we have done in the past. Each person will bring some food item, lawn chairs and snack tables. Carol Tito has volunteered to coordinate the items people will bring. Please notify her, or leave a message on her machine, or e-mail her assistant Joe Tito.

Help – I think we have enough food and drinks, but Stan does not have any table space for the food. Can someone bring a ‘light weight all purpose table’?

Directions: From Sunrise Highway, go south on Mill RD to Birch (approx 7 blocks), go left or east until you reach 77 Birch, then stop and enjoy.

Report from Wading River by Rich Ostrowski

Wading River is a nice place to retire to and really feels like country out here.  The running that I have been doing has been almost exclusively in Wildwood State Park and I am running 4 to 5 miles in a loop without repeating trails.  I have been running about 4 to 5 days a week, and enjoying running the trails.  The trails in the Park are great and I often see deer and as the trails meander near the bluffs on the sound, the views can be beautiful.  The down side of running the trails is that you have to seriously watch your footing.  Just two days ago I sprained my foot on something (rock or tree root) and am now recovering.  I have run on the roads however but they are hilly, lack much of a shoulder, and the contour of the roads puts more stress on the old ankles and knees.  Biking seems to be a major past time out here and I have met several people who have invited me to ride with them.  So I'm now considering buying a road bike and possibly a mountain bike for the trails.

We are near all the farms and vineyards on the north shore which I am enjoying and I have planted an herb garden which is bearing the fruits of my labor already.  Kathy is still working at Stony Brook University and loves not having the commute that she had before.  She is able now to come home in the afternoon and walk for some exercise at least.

Unfortunately we will not be able to attend the barbecue.  My daughter Kim and I are leaving for Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand on July 27th and will not be returning until the end of August.  Kim wants to see the world while she can before she starts her final year at graduate school.  She fears, at least for many years, she will not be able to take as large a chunk of time to travel when she starts to work again.  And for me I really have to see how it all turned out.  I have lots of mixed emotions about returning but it is something that I have been thinking about doing for a long time.  I would have liked Kathy to come with me, but she could not get the extended time off from work to make this trip.

The one thing I miss of Valley Stream is the running club and the Saturday and Sunday runs with everyone.  I have met runners out here but it is not the same.  Also, they just don’t know how to do pizza and bagels out here – ugh!

Regards to all,

Rich

John Corrigan – Remembered in Tanzania

To all: I thought you might like to see the attached photo from the Kondoa(Tanzania) 5k. The awards are my father's, refurbished with a small plaque in his memory. The gentleman in the back is former mile world record holder Filbert Bayi. See you on the roads,  Sean Corrigan.

Editor’s Note: Sean had donated his dad’s running medals and trophies to an African running club last year. In a sense John is still running and looking good.

Fun Runs, Speed Work, HILL WORK and Long Runs

·                Wednesday evenings. Group Runs / Walk at the Valley Stream pool at 6:00 PM.  Check with Donna, If new to club.

·        For Hill Work in Alley Pond Park on Sunday mornings we meet at 7:00 AM.  At Alley Pond we have a standard 6-mile loop and a lake loop which adds about 3 miles. Some people run 6 miles, some longer; you can decide at 5.5 miles. For those who go directly to Alley Pond Park, parking is on Winchester Boulevard just off of Union Turnpike.

·        For Long Runs we will meet on Saturday mornings, time of 7:30 AM at the bridge in the park.  Be on time though, because after one loop in the park we sometimes go off to places hither and yon. Bring water as we often leave the safe confines of the park.
