Aphorisms from various running thinkers:

·        'If life seems like its all uphill, you must be reaching your peak' - Ziggy

·        'The only disability in life is a bad attitude' - Scott Hamilton

·        ‘The only reason I would take up exercising is so that I could hear heavy breathing again.’ - Anonymous

May - The Orthotic

When I reached the ripe old age of 50, I developed heel spurs. They caused me great discomfort, such that running was painful. Well off to a Valley Stream Foot doctor. I believe they are called podiatrists which means they can charge more per visit. Dr. Zuckmore (DPM, FACFAS, and AARP) suggested the Orthotic would solve all my running problems and improve my Love Making. The device, adjustments, anti-inflammatory Drug, Cortisone shot, with spiritual meditation would cost 1,550 dollars (What the hell - My company’s Insurance would pay for it!). The foot bible states that ‘An orthotic is a specially made shoe insert designed to increase the mechanical efficiency of the foot.’ To use this thing I had to remove the nice soft inner sole and insert this rock hard thing in my new running shoes. The pain in my heel was relieved but I began to develop back pain and my Love Making did not improve. With reduced running, massaging and light stretching, I was able to get back to normal running. I use the Orthotic only for jogging around town. For races I will wear a soft running shoe without the Orthotic and hope that the pain does not return. For my Love Making problem, I purchase a book from Dr. Ruth.

If you have any articles, thoughts or race results, please e-mail them to me: Joe Tito

Tip of the Month

Does every runner need an orthodic? No, not if the runner is running pain-free. Anything you put in your shoe to make you better can make things worse if it's unnecessary. Orthotics are tricky, and so are feet. If things are going well, don't rock the boat.

What’s happening by Stan

Pasta Dinner:  We will be meeting on Friday night May 5 at 7 pm at the Alpine Garden restaurant which is on the SW corner of Franklin Ave. and Hempstead Turnpike in Franklin Square. You can park in the lot across Franklin Ave. It is the lot we use for Murph’s. We are not taking reservations. Just show up. The dinner will also be the May meeting.

L.I. Marathon and Other Events: I don’t know who will be running Long Island. The same weekend has the bike tour through the whole city and the great saunter which is a walk around Manhattan. Good luck to all who are going to compete. I signed up for Long Island but I have a bad ankle at the moment so I may not go. If I don’t go to the marathon, I will be somewhere on the course cheering you on or if my ankle is up to walking but not to my slow jogging, I will go to the great saunter.

Memberships for 2006: As we announced many times, the newsletter and other club notices will not be sent to non-members starting at Easter. Please encourage any of your friends who have not signed on for 2006 to do so. I sent an email with the 2006 membership list to the members recently.

June Meeting: This meeting will be in Hendrickson at the administration building on Sunday morning, June 11. We will have the usual breakfast and meeting. We will announce the time and if there will be a relay or other run before the breakfast in the next newsletter.

Best wishes and good health,

Stan

The Imbedded Reporter – Joe Tito

A Treatment for Heel Spurs - This item was passed to me a few months ago, what do you think?

‘Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) devices generate pulses of high-pressure sound that travel through the skin. For reasons that are not fully understood, soft tissue and bone that are subjected to these pulses of high-pressure energy heal faster. The FDA has approved the use of ESWT machines for kidney stones, paint mixing and flatulence.‘

As a senior runner on fix income with the above problem, I’m not about to pay some doctor good money to try out this procedure on me. Instead I have placed my feet into the speaker system of my 500 watt Hi-Fi with the sound turned up to maximum with my favorite rap music loudly playing. The only results I have seen so far, is the lost of hearing, hostile looks from Carol and diarrhea from Rambo the running dog. Oh yes, my black toe nails have fallen off.

Keep Going - This is a nice message pass to me by a friend and I would like to share it with you all - A familiar saying goes something like this: ‘Old age is a matter of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.’

That must have been John Kelly’s attitude. Kelley, who died in 2004 at the age of 96, ran in 58 Boston Marathons – including his last one in 1992 when he was 84 years old. Kelly’s remarkable feat is a reminder to each of us that we must stay active as long as we can. For too many folks hit middle age and put the body in neutral. Let’s make sure old age doesn’t stop up from bearing fruit.

A New Arrival

Maureen and I are happy and proud to announce the arrival of our grandson, Ryan Matthew, on Friday, April 21.  (6 pounds, 6 ounces and 20.5 inches). Everyone is doing well and Ryan and his mom went home on Sunday. Mike Gullien

Benson is the one to beat as reported in the VS Herald April 20

Valley Stream's Bill Benson continues to be a dominate force in the running world in the 85-89 age category. At the USA masters Indoor Track & Field Championship in Boston, March 24-26, Benson won two national titles in his age category. Benson ran the mile in 10:06.34, setting a new American and World Record for an 86 year old, and his time was also well above the All American Standard. Benson ran the 800M in 4:34.85.

Athlete's Foot: Putting Out the Fire

We can send astronauts to the moon, but we can't find a cure for athlete's foot. Maybe someday. In the meantime, here's a tip that may help you sidestep the problem: Apply some rubbing alcohol to your feet when you're finished toweling off after a shower.

The rationale? Isopropyl alcohol dissolves water, so it will help dry your skin, reducing the risk of attracting the fungus that causes athlete's foot. Try applying the alcohol with a pump-spray bottle; it'll help you get at those hard-to-reach nooks and crevices between your toes.

Fun Runs, Speed Work, HILL WORK and Long Runs

·        Wednesday evenings. Group Runs / Walk at the Valley Stream pool at 6:00 PM.  Check with Donna, If new to club.

·        For Hill Work in Alley Pond Park on Sunday mornings we meet at 8:00 AM.  At Alley Pond we have a standard 8-mile loop and a lake loop which adds about 3 miles. For those who go directly to Alley Pond Park, parking is on Winchester Boulevard just off of Union Turnpike.

·        For Long Runs we will meet on Saturday mornings, time of 7:30 AM at the bridge in the park.  Be on time though, because after one loop in the park we sometimes go off to places hither and yon. Bring water as we often leave the safe confines of the park.

Race Results

Tom ZulloEisenhower Park – 20K on 3/26 – 1:51:40, 1st in Age Group

The VS runners did a fine job this morning at JFK airport.  In a windswept and soaking rain on the runway, we all placed third in our age groups, with the exceptions of Denis, who placed first, and Laura, who placed third overall for the women's race.  Here are the names and times:

Denis - 21:38,            Laura - 26:34,            Fred - 28:23,              Tom Z. - 28:34

Camille - 28.50,         Lois - 41:34

Footnote from EZ:  TZ was dripping wet when he got home.  Is he NUTS?  I can't believe people actually do this on purpose!
