Aphorisms from various running thinkers:

Ø      ‘People who cannot find time for recreation are obliged sooner or later to find time for illness’ – John Wanamaker

Ø      ‘The unfortunate thing about this world is that good habits are so much easier to give up than bad ones’ – W. Sommerset Maugham

Ø      ‘God will not look you over for medals, degrees, or diplomas, but for scars’ – Elbert Hubbard

November - Choose to Feel

Carol and I were driving and noted a bumper sticker on the speeding red SUV: ‘Born to Win’. As I considered those words, I noticed the billboards we were passing. They urged me to choose things that would keep me from feeling – alcohol to deaden emotional pain; fat-laden food to alleviate feelings of emptiness; luxury cars and other expensive items to lessen feelings of worthlessness. Even, the TV and newspaper in our living room claim that: This exercise machine with 20 minutes of bliss will make me look and feel great, and when I get up in the morning I will feel no pain or stiffness by taking the magic Green Pill – just ask your doctor and call the 800 number. Many of these temptations can lure us away from the discipline of running by promising an easy life. Running to me is a metaphor for life, because I get out of it what I put into it.

Happy Thanks Giving from the Tito’s.

Tip of the Month

Do your exercises daily. The more you run, the more muscle imbalance occurs. The calf, hamstrings (back thigh) and low back muscles become short, tight and inflexible. They have to be stretched. On the other hand the shins, the quads (front thigh) and the belly muscles become relatively weak. They must be strengthened.

What’s happening by Stan

Hi Everyone,

Here is a list of upcoming events: (Much of it was given in an earlier e-mail but I included many updates and details in this column.)

1.     Lucky Duck dinner and meeting: This will be on Friday night Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. We decided last month that this would be the November meeting. Let me know if you are coming. I already have Donna’s list.

2.     Future meetings: We decided at the last meeting that future meetings will be on Sunday mornings at a diner, probably the Concord, where we will have breakfast. But note that there will be some occasions in warmer weather where we will have club races and/or relays at the park earlier with the breakfast/meetings to follow. You will be notified of these. The December meeting will be activities at and near Eisenhower with breakfast nearby. The details are below:

3. Turkey Trots and other races: Joe lists them along with other events in his usual fine fashion in this newsletter.

4. All Clubs Holiday Party: Saturday Dec. 3rd - 7 PM to 12 PM $38 per ticket  at the American Legion Hall in Massapequa: Call 569-4949 or visit www.lirrc.org  This is always a great party. I know since I have been attending for at least the last twenty years.

5. Jim and Herb 4 by 2 mile relay: Sunday Dec. 11 at Eisenhower: (time to be announced). We can do this as a warm-up for the Corrigan relay in 2006. Jim and Herb were kind enough to give up their names for John's in the first year after John passed away. The Eisenhower club now has three 4 by 2 mile relays. We will make up the teams with whomever shows up at least a half hour before the race starts. Come late and I will do my best to fit you in on a team. These relays are always a lot of fun and your speed doesn’t matter. We even let me participate.

6.     Holiday Run and Breakfast: The breakfast/meeting will be on Sunday, December 18, Colony Diner, 2019 Hempstead Turnpike, East Meadow, at 9 am. The diner is a bit East of Eisenhower Park on the North side of Hempstead Turnpike. This will be our December meeting. Before the breakfast/meeting, there will be a group run through the EAB plaza [among other spots] which you may join, or you may bike, walk, or do your own thing before the meeting.  Of course, you may just come for the breakfast/meeting. The group run, a walking group that I will join, and other exercisers will meet at 7:30 am in Eisenhower park field #1. No reservations required.

7.     New Year's Eve Champagne Run: We meet in the pool parking lot at 7 PM. We will have champagne (Jamaica Bay/2005) and cookies, perambulate the park, and get a little raucous and maudlin. No reservations required.

P.S. (http://www.freedictionary.com is a great site.)

8.     The Central Park New Year’s costume parade, midnight run and fireworks: We will go together on the LIRR from the Valley Stream station.  The time will be determined later since train schedules sometimes change. You can walk the run if you wish. Several of us did that last year.

Best wishes: Dorothy, Debbie, Tom Z., Marilyn, Eileen B., Robert S., and Janice  have illnesses or injuries and I wish them and all others who are in the same boat a speedy recovery.

Warm regards to all

Stan

The Imbedded Reporter – Joe Tito

It was noted that Mike Gillen was seen at a sports running store ordering a tee-shirt with a saying of ‘You have just been passed by Grand Pappy Mike’. Best wishes to Mike and Maureen on the coming event.

We wish John E. Cranston (Controller of ADP - Comprehensive Outsourcing Services – also a nice guy) on doing the Marine Corps Marathon. Looking Great!

Thanksgiving Races – I have not seen any announcements for the Garden City Thanksgiving race, I have noted 3 other races at the end of the newsletter.

Nov 4, 7:00 pm – Club Pasta Party at the Luck Duck

Lucky Duck restaurant, 9 Nassau Blvd., Garden City South. (Their number is 516-485-4848.) Please get in touch with Donna for details.

Fun Runs, Speed Work, HILL WORK and Long Runs

·        Wednesday evenings. Group Runs / Walk at the Valley Stream pool at 6:00 PM.  Check with Donna, If new to club.

·        For Hill Work in Alley Pond Park on Sunday mornings we meet at 7:00 AM.  At Alley Pond we have a standard 8-mile loop and a lake loop which adds about 3 miles. For those who go directly to Alley Pond Park, parking is on Winchester Boulevard just off of Union Turnpike.

·        For Long Runs we will meet on Saturday mornings, time of 7:30 AM at the bridge in the park.  Be on time though, because after one loop in the park we sometimes go off to places hither and yon. Bring water as we often leave the safe confines of the park.
