October - The Light to Come
I often run early in the
morning while it is still dark. It takes a while for my eyes to adjust to the
darkness, but gradually I am able to find my way on the road with no problem.
It amazes me how my eyes adjust to the darkness, taking in whatever little bit
of light there may be. This moment of time allows me to mediate on my little
world. Questions pop up into my mind, such as: What must be done? What would I
really like to do today? Is life just a journey? What did G.W. Bush know? And
of course - Is running really good for you?
The net result of my
contemplation is that my human heart suffers from its own darkness, but it,
too, is capable of discernment so as to see me through the day.
Yes – Running is good for
you and I do not know about the other stuff.

Tip of the Month
A few short spurts of
exercise scattered throughout the day may clear the bloodstream of an
artery-clogging fat better than a single workout would. A university study
found that three 10-minute burst of exercise lowered the blood level of
triglycerides, more than one continuous 30-minute session.

example Jon had the 19th best time on leg one.

RESULTS: VALLEY STREAM B
(I put this team down as a mixed masters and they changed it to a male masters
team so I guess they figured out that we only had 3 women which puts us in the
male category, which is the GLIRC strange way of doing things.)
Runner, place on leg, time,
pace * For example Tony had the 46st best time on leg one.

Thanks
to Artie, Carol, and Stan for helping out even though they were not running and
could have had an easier day. Much thanks to Tony, Donna, Dorothy, Fred, and
Joe who both ran and helped out. Thanks to Rick who came in all the way from
The party was excellent
with lots of food, soda, beer, and coffee and dancing to the same live band as
last year. It was nice to see the Hogues at the
party. Christine is more beautiful than ever.
DIRECTING THE RELAY TEAMS: Here is a bit of
what I did to get the teams and event together for the relay:
Building the team: People kept getting injured and dropping out.
Here is a record of what I did to get a team together. All details are skipped.
So all this happened: Rich and Mike switched legs.
Beth replaced David and Rick replaced Denis and I reshuffled the last legs of
team A. Tom Mazzara started out as leg one on the A
team, and then went to leg one on the B team, and then got injured. Denis went
from leg 5 on the A team to alternate, and then recovered and went to leg 6 on
the A team to leg one on the A team. Jon went from leg 6 on the A team to leg
one on the A team switching with Denis.
Rochelle went from leg 6 on the B team to leg 4 on the B team and Donna
went from leg 4 to leg 6 i.e. they swapped. Tony replaced Tom M. on leg one on
the B team. Got it? There will be a spot quiz.
Race day: I got up just after five and went to the
park, saw people off until
So there is part of what I
did for this relay. I think it’s my seventh year doing this and I sort of love
it in a masochistic way. I truly wish I can someday run it again.
Thanks to all who were
there and wasn’t it fun?
MESSAGE FROM
I will come to see everyone
at the club race in the winter [The John Corrigan relay] and I invite everyone
to come down to our (Bob’s or Rick’s) places. We are ready to give hospitality
to any members at
any time. Sun Mee is good at BBQ. I think we can take
10~12 persons in country style home.
Rick
P.S. to Rick: I hope you
don’t mind but I had to edit to get the E-mail into the proper format for the
column.
PASTA DINNER: Donna made a reservation for the club at
Lucky Duck for Friday night, Nov. 4 at

WISHES: Janice had her foot operated on some time
back and it has been a painful journey. It seems that the surgeon says that
screw they used was the cause of her pain and the expectation was that the removal
of the screw would stop the pain. It should be done about when you receive this
newsletter. We all wish Janice the very best of recoveries. Get well soon to
Dorothy who has plantar fasciitis and to Debbie who
has a very painful elbow joint. The same to all who have
injuries and illnesses and a Happy Jewish New Year to
all. I was born in the year 5700 so the present Jewish date gives
my age away. Or you could just say that I am older than dirt and I have the
dirt to prove it.

16th Annual Robert C. McAvoy
Labor Day Five-Mile Run – It was good to see Gregg and Rochelle from
the club at the race, we had great weather. A few observations about the race;
·
Why did they name this race after Robert C. McAvoy,
who is he?
·
The shirt provided was a heavy
duty bright red which is a departure from their standard cheap-o White Fruit of
the Loom.
·
It was not a Katz race hence
the race started late and finish times were estimates.
·
Awards are grouped in a 10 year age category, which is a
disadvantage if your age does not end in a zero.
·
My left heel pain did not go
away – I guess I will skip
All in all, it was a great
day at the beach and a nice way to say goodbye to the summer.
New Member – Welcome Carol Beckler
to the club, she did her first
My role in the relay race - Carol and I picked up
the team material at Runner's Edge on Friday. All went well except we had too
many X-Large shirts and too few Large shirts. The
problem was fixed by going back to Runner's Edge a second time for an exchange
of shirts. Moral - Always count your shirts before you leave a store.
On Sunday I did my normal
slow leg 2. The relay was fun except for the pain coming from the base of my
left heel. I have this pain for the last month. I have reduced my running, went
back to old my orthotics and put on a few more
pounds. Moral - You can run but you can not hide from Plantar Faciitis.
It must be noted that the B
team needs to work on Baton Passing. Variable time was lost because of
uncoordinated hand offs. Moral – We most learn to tip lightly on the timing
pick-up sensor and throw the Baton at the receiver who is waiting 50 ft down
the road.
The B team had the able
support of Fred, Donna and Dorothy. Carol provided car service for Tony and
Gregg. After dropping off Gregg we made our connection at the airport, our
To this day we are not sure
which leg Mike Gillen ran? I think it was leg 3 or maybe it was leg 5. Moral -
Pick a leg-any leg.

Words from Donna
I've never participated in
the
out to support the runners. It was a very challenging race, but great fun.
Carol Beckler and I were able to chat and laugh for
the entire 10k. Rochelle was too far ahead for me to talk to.
I just got back from a 62-mile
bike ride. It was a fundraiser for Cooley's Anemia. I
did it with friends from the Walking Club. We drove to Riverhead. The event
began and ended at the Aquarium. In the morning they had Starbuck's coffee and
Dunkin' Donuts. Every 10 miles there was an aid station with oranges, water,
Gatorade and, my personal favorite, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I
enjoyed the scenery and the beautiful weather. When you register for this
event, you get to pick the distance you want to ride. You can select from 10,
50, 62, 75 and 100 miles. Maybe next year I'll select 75. When I got back from
the ride, they had a barbeque that was donated by Applebee's. All in all,
it was a fun, tiring day. I think I ate more calories than I burned off.
