October -The Morning Run

I just returned home from jogging, it was a cold windy morning run, when I heard. "Did anything occur during your run with Rambo?" The question was from my wife Carol as I entered the house with Rambo the Running Dog. We were dog sitting this month while Brian (Rambo’s master) had some repairs scheduled for his house. Rambo does not like loud noises except when he is making them.

I searched my mind for something brilliant to report---Someone hit by junk falling from a passing plane, perhaps? Or collapsing of a neighbor’s porch on top of his huge SUV? Maybe Rambo bit an old lady putting out her garbage.  What incident would interest Carol? Patiently, Carol repeated the question. I remained silent. I was still thinking about my cold windy run. I did not tell her about the race I did last year. It was blustery cold at the starting line, I was in the back of the pack talking to a fellow runner, when the race suddenly began and we headed right into that driving wind, yet amid the huge mass of runners, it felt as still as the eye of a hurricane. 25 minutes into the race my body was hurting as I pushed for the finish, I must finish strong and get to the chow before its gone - I hate faster runners and leftovers.

Then my thoughts shifted back to the morning run, Rambo stopped our run 4 times to do his thing, I saw an old man walking with a small child in hand and we exchanged “Good Morning.” There were stretched black cars lined up in front of our church – I guess someone passed on. Sanitation did not pick up the old refrigerator at the curb of a house a few blocks north of us – It is still there. Oh yes, the sun feels good!

Carol was still waiting for an answer while Rambo was enjoying his water. "Did anything occur during your run with Rambo?" She asked once more, "No," I said. "It was just like every other run."

Tip of the Month

How does an orthotic differ from an arch support you can buy at the drugstore?

The arch support does just that-it helps the arch support your full weight. In many instance, this may be all the runner needs. The orthotic, on the other hand, maintains the foot in the normal position through the entire footstrike, from heel contact through mid-stance to toe-off.

Meeting & Club Races: We will have the October meeting after the Inwood race on Sunday 10/22. We will hold it over breakfast after the race.

I encourage everyone to participate in the club races as much as possible. Joe Tito has recommended the Ho Ho race for a club race.  There is a Lynbrook race which was a huge success last year and it sounds exciting. We will discuss the choices and make decisions at the meeting after the Inwood race. If you can’t be there, give your thoughts and opinions to someone who will be there. Joe has an excellent list of possibilities at the end of this newsletter.

I am putting a lot of energy and time into fall events and I put a lot into the relay. I have a ton of volunteer work that I am doing so I don’t wish to put any time or energy to a pasta party this year as the party hasn’t attracted much interest the last few years. Eddie is the only member whom I know is running this year. You can join a group of us who will take him out to dinner before the marathon. I will give the time and place soon. If you wish to put on a pasta dinner I will be glad to give you my blessing.

Lara and Luke Celebration: If case you haven’t heard the news: Lara and Luke have tied the knot and are now husband and wife.  We will be celebrating their marriage with a bash in the downstairs room at Murph’s in Franklin Square on Nov. 12 at 3 pm. There will be a buffet of tossed salad, Penne a la Vodka, Chicken Francois, and Pasta Primavera and wine, beer, and soda. Of course, no celebration would be complete without a cake and coffee or tea.

Club Discount: The cost per person will be $30 which we will collect at the party. The club will kick in $10 per person so the cost will now be only $20. Those who wish may contribute an additional $5 per person toward a gift for the newly weds.

Please RSVP as soon as you can as we have guaranteed Murph’s a minimum of 20 guests. If we don’t get to 20 we will have to move the event at another site.

Training Runs: I have gained a lot over the years from the club training runs. I have recently joined the 5 am Hendrickson Park group which meets almost every weekday morning. I am using it to get myself back into running after two years of medical and physical problems and one year of hard hiking. The runs are great for those who want to get a run in early in the morning every morning. There are the old favorite training runs on Saturday and Sunday as described at the end of every newsletter. Check out these runs and talk to me about your ideas of other training runs and/or track sessions.

Best Wishes to all: I was pleased to see that Janice has been recovering nicely from her foot surgery: My hopes are for complete recoveries for all who are ill or injured.

What happened? – Joe Tito

I was jogging with my friend Rambo the running dog, when he asked me why I was not my old happy self? Well, I replied as he began smelling a tree, I got lost running leg 2 of the Ocean to Sound Relay race. Rambo replied; how could that be? Did you not do leg 2 many times in the past? Did you not train to run this easily 6 mile leg? Was it you who provided all the team members with the directions? It was you who was in first place in the relay race for 5 minutes due to Jon Falk’s great effort? Yes, Yes it is all true. I quickly said; I was running by myself on East Merrick Rd lost in my own mind thinking about all the important things I must do and looking for the front runner. I was saying to myself ‘left on Park and Left on Lakeshore’ over and over again as I ran in second place. Then I saw Lakeshore Rd and made my left. The streets passed by and it did not look familiar. It came to me I had made a wrong turn and I must have passed Park Blvd. I then went west, no Park Blvd., and then I went north and later found Sunrise Highway.  In the distant east I could see Park Blvd and the police blocking traffic. I had only trained to run 6 miles and I know I wasted 2 miles in those side streets. I ran to Park Blvd, made my left on Lakeshore Rd and finally finished leg 2 – without a photo taken of me.

No Petra! No Carol! No Stan and Donna to see me come in. Then a moment later Petra appeared from between the cars, grabbed the stick and off she went in the direction of the park. Oh Shit; Stan and Carol must still be waiting on Merrick and Park and Petra is running leg 3 without support, what do I do now? 15 minutes later I met up with Stan who said ‘Where the ‘@#$%&@’ were you, we thought you got hurt; where is Petra? And who wrote these directions’. 10 minutes after Stan’s barrage, Carol shows up and gives me the ‘look’ as we drove in silence to meet Petra at the end of her leg.

It was later determined that a cop directed Petra to the wrong path, one of our team member (I will not state his name, but his first initial is M.) came to the race without his number and the Valley Stream Running Club did successfully completed the 21st annual Ocean to Sound Relay Race.

By this time, Rambo moves on to a telephone poll and says ‘What for supper? I replied, chicken for Carol and me and Dog food for you. With that Rambo said ‘Left on Park and Left on Lakeshore’, with a doggy smile.

The Guide Dog Foundation – Donna Hahl

The Guide Dog Foundation bike ride was fun. If you are interested for next year, here's the deal. You can register up to 4 people on one application for $50 as long as you say you are related. This year we put Rochelle, Debbie, Theo (Rochelle's boyfriend) and me on one application. It cost each of us $12.50.  I've done this bike ride for many years and never realized that a lot of people do this when they register.

For the Newsletter – Mike Gillen

On a recent Sunday morning, Denis, Tony and I saw a group of Senior Citizens in the Valley Stream Pool Parking Lot waiting for a tour bus.  In this group, we spotted Tom and Ellen.  We called to Tom, who didn't hear us, of course, so we went into the pool building looking for a bullhorn to get his attention.  He finally heard us and came over to say hello and told us they were taking a bus trip to Tennessee with their church.

Before we saw Tom, we had been measuring and marking the distance around the
Valley Stream Park.  Denis brought a measuring wheel, so the distances are accurate.  So, if you're walking or running around the lake, you'll notice some new markings on the pavement.  We started from the double gray doors on the pool building and went clockwise.  We measured along the sidewalk in front of the pool.  There are markings every eighth of a mile with a white line indicating the end of an eighth and a white cross for a quarter mile.  The loop we marked goes up to Hendrickson Avenue and back down.  The mile and one-half ends at the main entrance to the pool.  There are no markings in front of the pool; we just used the doors as markers.

Anyway, it was after we completed marking the loop that we saw Tom and told him what we were doing.  He asked to mark off 100 meters in front of the pool and Denis obliged.  Tom took the wheel and reset it to zero and proceeded to mark the distance.  After measuring off what looked to be 100 meters, Denis started laughing when he realized Tom had the wheel turned the wrong way and it was counting backwards.  Leave it to Tom.

Before we finished laughing, Ellen was calling to Tom because the bus was loading, so Tom had to leave.  As he walked away, we saw that Ellen had pinned a name tag on Tom so he wouldn't get lost.   Before the bus left, you could hear the other Senior Citizens asking each other whether Ellen was Tom's nurse.
