Living in God’s Waiting Room

Well we finally made our move to Leisure Knolls, not to be confused with Leisure Glen or Leisure Village which are all located in the same area of Ridge NY. Our community is made up of friendly 55 and above senior citizens who love to impart their many years of wisdom upon Carol and me. Did you know that geese mate for life! The deer do come into the area and will eat all your plants! There are many activities in the Knolls, but they do not do any of them!

I checked out my neighbors for possible jogging buddies, with no success. Most of the folks are happy to be walking let alone jogging. I’m reluctant to jog with Rambo the Running Dog because of the long stretch to the open field where it is safe for him to do his thing. Both Rambo and I are out of running shape and to make the trip through the community without an accident would take some training. I have been driving Rambo to the Knolls’ entry gate and we jog along Whiskey Road looking for deer and rabbits.

It’s 7:00AM, June 26th with the theme of Rocky in our minds and the Bellmore July 4th race coming up. We are ready to run the entire length of the community without stopping or using Carol’s car. Two blocks into the run, Rambo comments about the lack of trees and cats to chase. At block four, he asks did I get the $5.00 special entry fee for the Bellmore 4th race? I replied ‘Yes, I backed dated the check to get the early discount’ Rambo replies ‘Good Show’. At mile 1, we made it to Whiskey Road and to our first break – Ah life is good! The jog along Whiskey Road was okay, except for the lack of rabbit sighting and the deer was not be seen. We are now heading back home and the residents are coming out of their homes, waving their canes and walkers, cheering us for completing the great Whiskey Road run. The words are still in my head ‘Keep that dam dog off of my grass’.

Tip of the Month

Wait for your second wind. It takes six to 10 minutes and one degree in body temperature to shunt the blood to the working muscles. When that happens you will experience a light warm sweat and know what the "second wind" means. You must run quite slowly until this occurs. Then you can dial yourself to "comfortable," put yourself on automatic pilot, and enjoy.

2007 BBQ at Stan’s

What’s happening by Stan

The O to S relay is on Sunday Sept. 9:

The team and the legs are the following:

1: Jon 2: Bruce 3: Joe 4: Camille 5: Maria 6: Donna 7: Mike 8: Stanley.

Gregg is an alternate. Fred and I Stan will be driving and Donna, Bruce, Maria, and I hope more members will be helping out and cheering the runners on. We would dearly like another alternate.

We are a Master team. Our team name is "Valley Stream Running Club". Carol sent in the application and check to GLIRC for the race so all is ready. Materials will be picked up at Fred’s print shop days before the relay and at the park on relay morning.

Next Meeting:

We will have a club meeting on Sunday, August 26th, at 8 am by the Administration building in Hendrickson.

Please plan your runs that morning so you can attend and have a meal with your friends. We will discuss the relay and other business. Let me know if you can help out that morning with the breakfast meeting.

Wishing you all the best,

Stan

Hi, club members – From Carol Drucker

On Sunday, July 22, I participated in the long beach biathlon. What a blast! Donna told me about it, and it sounded interesting. I arrived early and ran into a friend from work who introduced me to a lot of people who said they were slow runners - this meant I found people to run with! the event began with a youth race which was great to watch. Right before the beginning, my support crew showed up. Very unrepentantly, Donna, Dorothy and Fred were there. What a great surprise! Dorothy said she would run with me. That was just awesome. well, I started with the "slow runners" from another team and they weren't kidding; they really were slow! Thank god for Dorothy because if left to my own devices I would slow down and get distracted from the challenge of running three miles on the beach. She was right in front of me - my carrot - so I had a pacer. is that cheating? Anyway, after the run, Donna - the rest of my support crew - was there holding my stuff for the swim portion. What a treat - a human transition area! anyway, I had no expectations of time because I've never run on the beach before (that's hard, by the way) and my ocean swimming is very challenging due to the navigation that one needs to do (I'm not very good at that). the entire event was a lot of fun. the only disappointment was I never saw Dorothy or Fred after I entered the water. THANK YOU VALLEY STREAM RUNNING CLUB! It’s great to be a member of a local club of friendly people who have a common thread.......................see you in the park. Carol

Petra says Hello

It's been kind of hectic with the move and all.  We've suffered some loses at our club; my thoughts & prayers do go out to the families.  In the past year I lost 2 uncles in their 60's and a 58 year old aunt I grew up with 2 weeks ago from a massive heart attack.

I notice plans are underway for the Bar B Q and boy do I feel homesick. There are lots to do here.   I've visited the Bodies exhibit at the Tropicana. Visited Lake Mead & Hoover Dam.  Amazing what our fellow humans can accomplish. I have zero sense of direction so the GPS navigational system has been one of my most important purchases.  This contraption has taken me twice to California (3 - 4 hours drive); in and around Nevada without fail.  With loads of free parking at all the places of interest public transportation seemed non-existent. Henderson/Green Valley where we live is far removed from the casinos.  Very family oriented .  Unsavory billboards aren't allowed, the only billboards are put up by the homebuilders.  I lucked out with my realtor.   Her knowledge, thoughtfulness and foresight is unique.  Churches are like gas stations.  I like our high schools.  Our teachers gave us their home telephone numbers and called us from home after school hours.  I missed it terribly, missed my family, friends, Hendrickson Park, change of season............, but everyday gets better.  The best part no husband.  Had to............ I teach exercises classes two days a week  at a country club home to older adults/baby boomers.  Don't anyone dare insult them folks by uttering the word 'senior'.  Tony Curtis also live somewhere there.  I saw a street sign with his name on it.   Amazing what modern technology can accomplish in a dessert.  It's breathtaking and spacious. The houses there range from $500 to over 1 mil.  I live about 10 minutes away.   Jobs are numerous.  Some work part time at the local casinos/businesses and at their own club house.  Most don't need the money, some pays aren't that great, but for them the social interaction is priceless. I think this is a great town for retirees.  Unless the men are golfing, hiking or gambling the women do out number them.  Though the few gentlemen I've seen look just as fit handsome and attractive.  Wow, and I'm almost single. Drivers and cyclist equally share and respect each other on the roads.  Cyclist ride in full regalia. They ride in bright colored packs leaving me to assume that they shop at Performance stores and the like.

My tan is to die for.  God's willing I hope to visit New York after graduation - sometime in March 2008.

Lots of love, best of health. Petra

Fun Runs, Speed Work, HILL WORK and Long Runs

Wednesday evenings. Group Runs / Walk at the Valley Stream pool at 6:00 PM. Check with Donna, If new to club.

For Hill Work in Alley Pond Park on Sunday mornings we meet at 7:30 AM. At Alley Pond we have a standard 8-mile loop and a lake loop which adds about 3 miles. For those who go directly to Alley Pond Park, parking is on Winchester Boulevard just off of Union Turnpike.

For Long Runs we will meet on Saturday mornings, time of 7:30 AM at the bridge in the park. Be on time though, because after one loop in the park we sometimes go off to places hither and yon. Bring water as we often leave the safe confines of the park.

Race Results

Long Beach 10-miler on Sunday, May 27, 2007:

Liz Farrell 1:44:41, Jon Falk 1:12:07, Donna Hahl 1:49:33 2nd in age group

Dorothy Russo 1:44:26, Tom Zullo 1:35:14Donna reports about the New Hyde Park Inaugural Duathlon. It was a 5 mile run; a 12 mile bike; and a 2 mile run.  I only did the New Hyde Park 5 mile race once before and I forgot how hilly the course was. They decided to do a Duathlon in addition to the 5 mile run because one of their club members passed away earlier this year and the Duathlon was in his memory.Front Runners New York Lesbian and Gay Pride Run - 5 miles

Dorothy Russo 38:02, Liz Farrell 38:09, Donna Hahl 38:31

Stan Friedlander 44:36, Joe Tito 44:37Donna - On Saturday, July21, 2007 Lois and I participated in the Arrow Exterminating Women's 5k in Farmingdale. There were almost 500 participants. In the past, Vytra was the sponsor of this race. When HIP took over, they had to find a new sponsor. I was afraid we would get roach motels and mouse traps in the goodie bag. I was pleasantly surprised. The race begins in the street and ends on the track of Farmingdale High School.  The course is through the beautiful tree-lined streets. The goodie bag was filled with really good give always and there were 22 raffles.  The weather was perfect and we had a super time. Donna - On Sunday, July 29th Carol Drucker, Liz Farrell and Donna Hahl participated in the inaugural Strong Island Rookie Triathlon at SUNY Old Westbury. It consisted of a 12 lap swim, an 8-mile hilly bike, and a 2 mile hilly run.

Carol         1:06:33    1st in age group

Liz             1:16:07    1st in age group

Donna        1:16:01    1st in age group

Since mid-week the weather forecasters were predicting thunderstorms for the weekend.  The weather turned out to be very muggy and overcast......but no rain or thunder/lightening. I was grateful for that.  There were 106 participants. Carol finished mid-fifties, Liz finished 91st and I finished 90th.

I found the hills at SUNY Old Westbury very challenging.
