Aphorisms from various running thinkers:

Ø      ‘In a country where only men are encouraged, one must be one’s own inspiration’ – Tegla Loroupe, 1994 and 1995 New York City Marathon Champ

Ø      ‘The trouble with jogging is that by the time you realize you are not in shape for it, it is too far to walk back.’

Ø      ‘I had to give up jogging for my health. My thighs kept rubbing together and setting my pantyhose on fire.’

Tip of the Month

When injured find a substitute activity to maintain fitness. Swim, cycle or walk for the same time you would normally jog. Most injuries result from a change in your training.

What makes a runner? by Joe Tito

Many of us who enjoy the sport, say a runner is one who runs 20 plus miles a week, collects tee shirts and have black toe nails. I say it is all in the head. A runner knows things that non-runners do not. If you know the answers to these questions then you are truly a runner.

1.      How many miles are in 10 kilometers?

2.      Who is Rosie Ruiz and what did she do in the Boston and New York Marathons?

3.      Can you say "fartlek" without getting embarrassed?

4.      When you're trying to pass someone in a race, is your first question to that person is "How old are you?"

5.      Do you rent extra storage space in order to house your T-shirt collection?

How did you do with the quiz? If you can answer 4 out of 5 correctly, then you truly are a runner.

I guess I am still a runner; I completed the LI RexCorp 10k/Half marathon race. My time was not great, but I did get to see some of my old friends on the course. To me the race was a great success because I received 2 T-shirts (one large and one extra large), a white Cable-Vision cap and a gym bag. The big question for me is, where do I store this junk?

What’s happening by Stan

Meetings: The next meeting will be in the park at 8 am on this Sunday May 18. One item we will discuss at this meeting is when and where we will have the next and future meetings. It was suggested that attendance at meetings might improve if we moved them to a different time slot such as weekday evenings and/or even to a different place. As an example, there was a time when the club we would run in Hendrickson on a weekday evening and then have the meeting at a pizzeria.  Perhaps a change would be beneficial. Let us know your feelings in this. I value your input. If you can’t make the meeting please email me.

BBQ: People plan their summer weekends way ahead so we had to pick a date now.  I regret that we can’t accommodate all who emailed their choices.  The majority asked for the second Sunday in July so the barbecue will be at my place on Sunday afternoon, July 13th. Joe and Carol Tito have again graciously volunteered to coordinate the affair. The following Sunday will be the rain date.

Races: The Long Beach 10 miler, The State Park Summer Series, and the Bellmore 4 miler are the most popular local races for club members this time of year. I sent out an email with information on the 10 miler and Joe will give the info on the other races elsewhere in this newsletter.

Hikes: I am leading hikes on the Nassau/Suffolk green belt trail. My first was a 5 miler in Bethpage State Park last Sunday. My second will be this Sunday and we will meet at the trail head on Stillwell Lane at 1:15 pm. I will also be in parking lot 2 at Eisenhower at 12:30 for those who want a ride. It is a difficult hike but the scenery is well worth it. Email me for the details if you didn’t see my prior emails.

Congratulations to all who have been running and racing so well. Please share your race times and experiences with the club by sending your information and articles to Joe.

Best wishes

Stan

Tony Cannonito comments on my last VSRC article about my Slimnastics group.

Joe, I would suggest that you move back to VS where two miles is part of our warm up. Mike and I can put you through a serious training program and restore you to your former youthful self.  Few people know this but the VS Lake is the fountain of youth. Every morning we would suggest a brief swim after the run. Regards,  Tony

I am Green

I did my first 25k Trail Run on the northern portion of the very scenic Long Island Greenbelt Trail.  I was nervous about running on the trails, so a friend agreed to stay with me either walking/running. As it turned out, we walked the whole 25k.  We finished in 6 hours.  Driving to Plainview which was the start of the event, I kept thinking that it was going to rain.  The weather cooperated and it turned out to be a perfect day to enjoy the beauty of nature.  For the most part it was overcast and every now and then the sun came out.

We got lost 3 times so we ended up doing almost 18 miles. This was a fun way to spend the day.  Hiking on the Greenbelt is something I would recommend to everyone.

Long Island Half Marathon

Last Sunday I did the Long Island Half Marathon. It took a lot to get me out of the house that morning because I really didn't want to run.  I'm glad I did because I traveled there with Dorothy, Liz and Bernadette.  It was fun for me to be with them.  When we arrived at Eisenhower Park, we saw Fred and Tom Zullo.  We walked to the start of our respective races.  I still was feeling like I didn't want to run. My heart and head just wasn't into it.

At the first water stop or thereabouts, I ran into Mary Ostop.  We were both very happy to see each other. We began to run and talk. It was such a wonderful experience for me. I believe God liked me that morning because he/she made sure that Mary and I ran into each other.  We enjoyed the music along the way and continued to talk. Before I knew it, we finished 10 miles. As we entered the park, we saw Stan. It was nice of him to be there.  As Mary and I were very close to the arch of balloons and the finish, the announcer called us by name.  As we came through the finish, we were still talking.  I wish I could better express how appreciative I am of Mary running and talking with me that morning.

I want to say thanks to Dorothy, Liz and Bernadette. If it wasn't for them I wouldn't have made it to the park that morning. I was really having a bad morning.

I just have to say a great big thank you to Mary for getting me through the half marathon.  I was on a high for two days.  Donna
