Aphorisms from various running thinkers:
· ‘Before
you criticize someone, you should run a mile in their shoes. ’ - Zen
·
‘I've always felt that long, slow distance produces long, slow
runners.’ - Sebastian Coe
· ‘I
believe that the Good Lord gave us a finite number of heartbeats and I'm damned
if I'm going to use up mine running up and down a street.’ - Neil Armstrong
Tip of the
Month
Don't assume
that you have to run 30 minutes all at once. If you have 15 minutes to run on
the treadmill before you start making dinner, go for it. Then, while dinner is
cooking, jump on for another 15 minutes. As long as you do the segments in the
same day, your body is basically getting the same benefits as if you ran all
the miles in one workout.
The
Pedometer – by Joe Tito
A growing number of people find that wearing a pedometer helps
them increase their level of daily exercise. It is said that the step-counting
device is both a recorder and a motivator. Knowing how many steps one takes
encourages them to toddle on more.
I got my pedometer out of a cereal box. I received 6 pounds of
healthy wood saw dust chips with added vitamin C and an 8 pound battery powered
pedometer. The instructions were written in English, Spanish, French, Latin and
Korean on a 3 by 5 card. Step 1 was to enter my weight in kilograms, step 2
required me to enter my strive distance in cubits and step 3 required me to tie
the device to my left leg 3 cm above my ankle.
The next morning, I attached my new pedometer, cell phone and
radio to my body, got Rambo (the running dog) up at 6AM and proceeded out the
door. Half way down the block, my cell phone began to ring. I automatically
reached for my radio and tried to speak - no one was there. Rambo decided that
jogging was not his thing, stopped and began to smell my pedometer. Not seeing
Rambo, I tripped over him and landed on my rear. After a few more false starts,
I was able to complete my morning run. Back at the house, feeling a little pain
with no gain, I checked my distance on the pedometer display. It read the
following; Hola José, le distante es 5 kilometres!

What’s
happening by Stan
Hi Everybody:
Summer is here and
there are lots of fun things to do especially if you think of your running/walking/biking/hiking/yoga/weights
etc. as fun - even when it hurts.
One of
the main reasons to join a club is to do the fun things with your friends. Here
is a list of opportunities for you join with your club friends this summer:
Group runs: The group
runs on Saturday, Sunday, and weekday mornings, and on Thursday evenings are
ongoing. Note that the Thursday evening now includes a running group and a
walking group and occasionally Donna rides around on her bike. Also last week
Mother Lara and Grandmother Dorothy walked with their strollers and their
precious cargo. It was a beautiful sight.
Summer series: It is
too late to sign up for the full series but you can sign up for individual
races except for Bethpage. It gets too crowded there especially exiting the
race so they are restricting Bethpage to full series runners who get there by
6:15 pm.
BBQ: The
annual event will be at my place on Sunday, July 13, at 2 pm and Joe and Carol are
coordinating. The barbecue will be the site of the next meeting. By the way, we do need a chef so please
volunteer. Please RSVP to Joe.
Ocean to Sound Relay: It will
be on Sept. 7 and this year it is for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s
fight against blood cancers. I am asking people to sign up ASAP. Just let me
know. It will be on a first come basis. The club will pay half of each runner’s
fee so each runner will get a shirt and a party ticket for just $20. I hope to
have our first team set up soon
The Beginning and the End: Summer
traditionally starts with the July 4th races at Bellmore and at
Massapequa and ends with the Long Beach Labor Day 5 miler. Let’s have a crowd
at each.
Pictures please: We do need more pictures
for our newsletter and our web site so please bring your cameras to events and
shoot away. We are a good looking club so let’s flaunt it.
I wish you all a fun filled
and rewarding summer: And don’t
forget to protect yourself from the sun. Skin cancer can kill.
Stan
You-all’
come to the annual club BBQ on Sunday July 13 at 2 p.m. at Stan’s home at
77 Birch Lane. All members, family,
friends and pets are welcome. We will work the party as we have done in the past.
Each person will bring some food item, lawn chairs and snack tables. Carol Tito
has volunteered to coordinate the items people will bring. Please notify her,
or leave a message on her machine, or e-mail her assistant Joe Tito.
Directions: From Sunrise Highway, go
south on Mill RD to Birch (approx 7 blocks), go left or east until you reach 77
Birch, then stop and enjoy.

Zullo
This
morning I was at the NHP 8K Championship race. It used to be a five
miler, but now is part of the LI track and field so as to attract more runners.
Many clubs were represented including LIRRC, Fast Feet, Rolling Thunder, Alley
Pond and Massapequa. I did the course over five years ago, so I knew the
first two miles were hilly, a mile along the service road of the LIE was nice
as most of it was downhill and the final two miles along Shelter Rock Road and
assorted side streets to the finish at the Denton Ave School. I ran the course
in 43.55 so I was under the nine minute mile. I am slowly improving my
time in my races and as long as I continue my runs in Valley Stream, my race
times should get better. I 'm planning my next run at the Jones Beach State
Park Series. I hope to see some Valley Stream runners there. TZ

I'm so
jealous I could spit. Seems that since I left, you guys have been having a
blast. I can actually taste the food at my favorite restaurants, the
bagels at the club meetings; picture the scenic route along the Greenbelt where
I went for many rides by myself and with my boys, to the sweaty, smelly runners
at the end of a race. You better believe I miss it. Last time I
went out to dinner was with you guys at the pasta restaurant in Garden
City. This @#%*&% massage thing has taken over my life and there's
still a long ways to go. F...........%#
Well I did encounter a number of sweaty, smelly runners at the Las Vegas
marathon in December - where we did pre and post event massages. There
were a sprinkling of famous folks amongst the lot, nah, didn't get a chance to
engage in gaga - lines were to long.
I opened my email yesterday to find about 4 maybe 5 emails about Bob &
Val's upcoming visit to town; but those email people are all taking off.
Hope it's not something Bob said. Would have loved to see those two.
Last time I saw Bob & Val their children were still single and childless.
Hmmm.... I wonder if their cat is also single & childless.
This time instead of food I'd bring my massage table and chair. For our runners
those tight hamstrings, pecs, hip flexors, jiggly glutes, rotator
cuff, knee, rounded shoulders, forward head, to name a few chronic
holding patterns/compensations which is just the tip of the ice berg - I
need you on that table.
Maybe it's because of my new interest I had no idea that there were so many
rolfers, chiropractors and physical therapist, especially the last
two. Henderson is teeming with them. There seem to be offices
all over town. Almost daily I'm introduced to or run into them.
Know what........maybe I should try making plans to coincide my next trip
around this time next year.
Race Result
EZ reports on Tom Zullo - Tom
ran 43:18 last night at Jones Beach for 5 miles. He came over the finish line
just as the rain drops were falling. We drove home in a torrential
downpour. We were glad that we didn't have to drive east because that is
the way the storm was headed. All the post race ceremonies were
canceled. TZ wanted his goodies! It was cold on the
boardwalk. I have a photo of Tom crossing the finish line - with a dark
and light sky above. It definitely was an adventure getting back to the
parking lot. It was pouring. There were more than 1100
finishers.
