Aphorisms from various running thinkers:

Ø      ‘I’m a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more luck I have.’
Thomas Jefferson

Ø      ’Strategy without action is as dangerous as action without strategy’ - Chinese Proverb / Author unknown

Ø      ‘I'm in shape... "Round" is a shape, isn't it?’

Trying to get back in shape by Joe Tito

2007 was not a good year for running; I have gotten a year older and put on more pounds. My plan to start a running club in our 55 plus gated community did not work out. The folks here like to talk about grand kids, and complain about their aches and pains. To make matters worst, Rambo the Running Dog has given up long distance running and has dedicated himself to the half mile run to Whiskey Road (Whiskey Road is a known hangout for dogs). There must be a way to get back into shape.

They tell me that our Leisure Knoll community has lots of activities; Needles & Crafts, Mah Jongg, Bingo, a beginners computer club(no way), Line Dancing and Slimnastics to name a few. You guessed it! Carol and I decided to join the Slimnastics group which meets three times a week in the recreation building. The group is headed by Marie who is 4 foot 11 inch, 70 plus friendly lady. She is backed up by two lady assistants and Walter (the only male). Walter’s job is to blow the whistle to start the session.

Carol and I lined up in the back of the group - we did not wish to show off our athletic abilities. At exactly 9:30 AM, the DVD began to play on the big screen, the whistle was sounded by Walter and the old folks lined up. On the screen the image came into focus of a woman in her late fifties who began the ‘POWER WALK – TWO MILE – TREK TO A NEW LIFE VIDEO’. Our group attempted to follow; give me a left, right, a one, two, a side, back, front and the ever popular cry ‘Are you feeling good!’ It was a sight to behold – Is this my new trek to life? Half way through this walking marathon, Marie approached Carol and me and said ‘You two do not have to walk the 2 miles – You’re only beginners’. I smiled and replied ‘No problem’ and pretended to be having fun.

Tip of the Month

In order of importance, write down two to four running goals you’d like to achieve in the next 6 months. They can be as general as: to run injury-free; to feel good on almost every run; or to better balance you’re running with your family life and career.

What’s happening by Stan

Corrigan Relay and Meeting: The relay will be on Sunday, March 16 at 9 am. Please come by 8:15 so we can form the teams and you can warm up without being rushed. The club will pay for the teams as long as the team selects a name which includes the club name either spelled out or as vsrc. It is a 4 by 2 mile relay. We will make up teams that morning. Each team will have a captain who will set up the order of runners and make sure that all goes well.  The full schedule for the Long Island Running Club is at LIRRC - Calendar

The spring meeting will be at the Empress Diner which is at the southeast corner of Hempstead Turnpike (Rte. 24) and Rte. 106 which is found by driving east from the park on Hempstead Turnpike. We will probably get there a bit before 11 am. It is hard to estimate it better than that. I will arrange for us to have a table in the back on the left as you go in.

Please wear your Corrigan shirt and other VSRC gear at the relay and at the meeting if at all possible.

Group Runs:

1. Daily Weekday Runs: This group meets in the pool parking lot at Hendrickson (East end) at 5 am.

2. Saturday Run:  Mike reports as follows:

We run on Saturday mornings.  The current meeting time is 7:30AM by the Chester St. entrance (near the bridge). That's on the east side of the park.  There are usually 3 or 4 of us.  If the weather is too bad, we might not be out there, but we do run in snow and light rain.

3. Sunday Runs at Alley Pond Group One: This group meets in the parking lot on Winchester opposite Creedmoor at 7:30 am.

4. Sunday Runs at Alley Pond Group Two: This group meets in the pool parking lot at Hendrickson at 7 and drives up together. Usually the first group is the faster group.

Here are the contact people for each group:

Try to email well in advance and be sure to check that the group you want will be running on the day you plan to go.

I have tentatively scheduled our annual LI Marathon Pasta Party on Friday night May 2 at 7 pm at the Alpine Garden. It is tentative as I haven’t had time to discuss the place and time with my officers and to contact the restaurant. We will firm it up soon.

Best Wishes to All

 Donna trip to Miami

On Sunday, 1/27/08 I did the Miami Half Marathon with my brother.  We finished in 2:32. Frank, my brother, always registers for the full marathon and then ends up doing the half with me. He's a good guy. Every year he comments that I talk too much when I'm running.  I guess it's not that annoying to him because he continues to run with me.   This year they started the race with a beautiful fireworks display and fire boats with water spouting almost as high as the fireworks. It was beautiful.  It was in the mid-60s and overcast.  There was no sun to deal with. I thought it was perfect for running/walking.

Race Result

Donna Hahl - Saturday, 2/16, participated in the Cherry Tree 10-mile race in Prospect Park.  Finished in 1:48. It was a crisp, cool day to run. Luckily there was no wind to contend with during the race. There were a few hills, so, for me, it seemed longer than 10 miles.
