–
Ø
Key dates: VS
Rotary Run - August 1 and 3rd Fruit Relay Race August 8.
Aphorisms from various running thinkers:
Ø
‘Start by doing what’s necessary, then what’s possible, and
suddenly you are doing the impossible’ – Saint Francis of Assisi
Ø
‘Opportunity only knocks on doors that it knows are already
open to it’ – Ziggy
Ø
‘On my solo runs, I can focus on the troubles and joys of
becoming myself and arrive at a sort of peace’ – Dr. George Sheehan
July - the subject is Socks
There have been many articles about
running shoes, but little has been written about the lowly sock. Point 1: Stay away from
100-percent cotton socks. Cotton socks will absorb enough sweat to fill an
8-ounce glass, which will cause your feet to feel soggy, smelly and
uncomfortable, and you will, quite possibility, develop a blister. Point 2: Watch out for toe
seams, they’re one of the biggest causes of blisters. Consider socks that are
padded in high impact areas, like the heel and toe. Point 3: Look for socks made from either synthetic fibers or
a blend of natural fibers and synthetic fibers. Point 4: Expect to pay $5 to $16 for performance socks.
With point 4 in mind, I choose my socks wisely. I like those made
from re-constituted cotton, packaged 3 sets for 99 cents and have an embroided
red greyhound stitched on the side. I do notice that my big toe tends to push
through the front of my left sock after a short jog. To maximize my sock
investment, I will rotate the left sock to the right foot and vice versa every
2 miles, which tends to spread the wear evenly. On a different note, some men
prefer woman panty holes (I will not say who they are), which looks great if
the legs are shaven and have some shape. In my case, I find them uncomfortable
in the summer.

Tip of the Month
Choose your socks wisely; those made
from synthetic blends are best. Avoid all-cotton socks. Cotton and wool absorb
moisture, which causes unwanted friction between your foot and the sock. Apply
petroleum jelly to sore areas to reduce friction, or rub your foot with talcum
powder or dry soap flakes before you slip on your socks. If a sore area becomes
so painful during a run that your form is affected, stop. Walk home if
necessary. Resume running only when you can run unaffected by the blister.

Fruit [or Surprise] Relay: The last relay at the June meeting was
a big success. Four bananas got the ride of their lives. We will have a repeat
relay on the morning of the BBQ. We will meet at 7:30 a.m. to form the teams
and the race will begin at 8:00 a.m.. Rules for the relay will be made up as we
go along. There will be no food and no meeting at the relay as the BBQ and
meeting are later in the day.
BBQ: We will meet
at my place, 77 Birch Lane, at 2 p.m. on Sunday July 18 for the annual
barbecue. Joe and Carol are handling the arrangements so please contact them.
The details are given by Joe elsewhere in this newsletter. If it is raining, we
will postpone it to the following Sunday, July 25. The July meeting will be at
the barbecue. The main orders of business will be getting teams ready for the
Ocean-to-Sound relay and collecting orders for the windbreakers. I hope you can
all be there.
Windbreakers: It looks like
this: We can get excellent quality windbreakers imprinted with the club name
and logo at a give away price. The
breakers would be well worth it at the club's cost of about $17 for each one,
but because club members have worked so hard at the club races to build up our
treasury, the club will pick up most of the cost of the windbreakers for each
member. So the member would pay the give away price of $7 for one and $16 for
two. [So the club would be contributing about $10 for one and $18 for
two]. Also, I have arranged it so you
will not be charged tax on the items. As a bonus for our loyal out of towners,
the club will pick up the shipping charges. Note that we will need a minimum
order of three dozen to get this deal. If not, the deal will be gone.
All you have to do to order is to give
me the color and size for each one you want. The colors are black or forest
green and each has the club name on the back and the bird on the left lapel,
both in white. The sizes go from to small to xxlarge [or maybe xxxlarge].
Please get your orders in soon as it has to be all ordered at once. No more
breakers will be available once the order goes in.

Directions: From Sunrise
Highway, go south on Mill RD to Birch (approx 7 blocks), go left or east until
you reach 77 Birch, then stop and enjoy.

I have applications for the 45th Annual Atlantic City Boardwalk races. They are on 10/17 and you can do either a
full marathon, half marathon, 10k or 5k. The early entry fee is until 10/5.If
anyone wants an application, they can let me know. A few of us from the VSRC
did this race last year and had a fun time.
On Saturday, 6/26 Eddie Pettinato and I
participated in our first triathlon.
It was a fundraiser for the Neonatal Intensive Care unit at Mercy Hospital. The
swim was 500 yards, the bike was 8 miles and the run was a 5k. Here is how we did:
Eddie P. 1:08:34
Donna H. 1:20:33 (first in age group) only 4 in age
group. Not many older, more mature women participated. All the better for me.
This event will be on my calendar the minute the date for next year is
announced. It was just more fun to do
than I can express. I'll do a short (I
think) article about my training process for this tri. Even though this was a
very small triathlon, I couldn't have done it without the support and
encouragement of my friends and family.
It was a perfect first one for me to do because it was in a pool.

Question
of the Month?
Do track races
run counterclockwise or clockwise?
Counterclockwise,
it was an arbitrary decision that started with the chariot races at Rome's
Circus Maximus stadium in the sixth century BC, experts in biomechanics think
there also may be some coincidental physiological benefits. Most people are right-leg
dominant, so that they use their left leg more for support. When running
counterclockwise, you'll take longer strides with your right leg - which allows
for more propulsion and speed on the turns.
